European Social Survey

The first publication of Round 11 (2023/24) data is now available for 13 countries. Data is now available from Austria, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Round 11 included questions on #gender, fielded for the first time, and social inequalities in #health, with many items repeated from Round 7 (2014/15). Attitudinal #data collected in every round focuses on climate change and energy; crime and justice; democracy and government; immigration; health and wellbeing; institutional and social trust; media and internet use; European, national and ethnic identity; perceived discrimination; political affiliation, interest and participation; religion; social exclusion; and values. Core #questions also cover respondents’ ancestry; education; employment; financial circumstances; household composition; and other socio-demographics including gender and parental information. Data included in the first release is only weighted with design weights. Post-stratification weights are added when data for all participating countries is available. https://lnkd.in/efEDWpEF

Dutch data users will be invited to present their #research at a conference being held on 27 March 2025. Researchers that have analysed our Dutch #data on any topic in a comparative or longitudinal context will be invited to participate. Contributions on #survey methods should focus on how the collection and analysis of our Dutch data can be improved in future. The ODISSEI - Open Data Infrastructure for Social Science and Economic Innovations conference Call for Papers will be open from Sunday 1 September until Tuesday 15 October 2024.

A climate change study that analysed our #data was published earlier this year by Wellbeing, Space and Society (Elsevier). Gina Martin and Tasha Roswell (Athabasca University and Western University) with Alina Cosma (Trinity College Dublin) investigated the relationships between climate change concern, personal responsibility to mitigate its effects and wellbeing. "Worry about climate change is negatively associated with happiness and life satisfaction. Belief in a personal responsibility to reduce climate change is positively associated with happiness and life satisfaction."

Later this year, we will be inviting institutions to lead three areas of work in our 2025-29 work programme. The call will be open to new and existing Core Scientific Team (CST) members and will focus on three areas: guidance to analysing the data, #survey non-response and academic impact. The 2025-29 work programme will be underpinned by our five-year Strategic Plan which sets out plans to transition #data collection from in-person interviews to self-completion modes (online and postal questionnaires).

A new Social Indicators Research (Springer Nature Group) article on attitudes towards #immigration included analysis of our data. Angelo Moretti (Universiteit Utrecht) and Anisa Ahmed (The Manchester Metropolitan University) assessed our Round 7 (2014/15) #data at the regional level and computed small area estimates.

An article published last week by La Vanguardia included reference to research that analysed our #data. Joan Miquel Verd (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) assessed some of our Round 10 (2020-22) data for #research published by Fundación ”la Caixa” earlier this year. The study found that young Spanish respondents have strong personal relationships with their friends and parents.

Research published by Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science (Sage) included analysis of our #data. Cherifa Ben Farhat and Nicola Pontarollo (University of Brescia) assessed our #data from the past 20 years measuring the #happiness of respondents across #Europe. "…we show that the percentage of happy people in European countries has increased over the last two decades, and that Eastern European countries are catching up. However, considerable differences between nations remain."

Do you know an early-career researcher working in the UK #survey #research community that should be recognised? Nominations are open until Friday (23 August) for a Survey Futures initiative that will celebrate the talent, passion and contributions of those working in the sector. Six award winners will be announced at an event hosted by the Royal Statistical Society on Thursday 17 October 2024. Survey Futures is a project that will ensure it remains possible to carry out high quality social #surveys in the UK, funded by the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council.

We are looking for five external members to join our newly established Research Ethics Board. The REB is the body responsible for advising the ESS on all matters related to ethical issues that arise from conducting a large-scale cross-national survey. Applications should include information on areas of #research expertise, any previous experience of serving on #ethics boards and any relevant training or qualifications in the field. Applications should be submitted via email by Friday 4 October 2024.
