It's such an exciting time in AI and one innovation we've been enjoying is Google's NotebookLM, that can now generate podcast episodes about any website or content. What better way to test out its capabilities than the 200+ page Cambridge PhD thesis of our very own Josh Newman... Listen in for the drama you didn't know you needed at the molecular level!
I've been experimenting with NotebookLM from Google lately, and was curious as to how well it can handle large documents, so naturally I uploaded my PhD into it to see how well it coped with that. A few take-homes: ⌛ Incredibly quick processing time. A 60k-word PDF analysed within a few minutes, immediately ready for querying and usage on the platform 🎙️ Output to podcast beyond impressive, and a great way to improve accessibility - particularly of technical documentation - for a broader audience. 📢 The 'hosts' had a nuanced understanding of my entire PhD, and gave an accurate deep dive across chapters with clear contextual knowledge of the space, whilst also breaking down complex topics into layman's terms. And they were funny and engaging as they did it! 📚 Multi-source review brings together a range of source material to provide a wider overview of a topic, and draws evidence from across these sources when querying. Great applications for reviewing the literature in a niche area - and getting a fully referenced response - particularly useful when there may be conflicting evidence. 🎓 Very powerful learning companion - a virtual study buddy! A quick way to digest and query information in an interactive way. Got a clarifying question? Want to produce a study guide? NotebookLM has you covered. For the interested among you, I've attached the podcast version itself, now in a format that allows my friends and family to actually understand what I spent 3 years of my life doing... Overall, highly recommend NotebookLM - it's free and a great learning boost, particularly to auditory and interactive learners! 👏
