Factory International

Performing Arts

A global destination for arts and culture in Manchester, operated by the team behind Manchester International Festival.

About us

Inventing tomorrow together. New art and music – at our venue Aviva Studios, online, across our city, around the world and at Manchester International Festival. Factory International will commission, produce and present an ambitious year-round programme of original creative work, music and special events by leading artists from across the globe. Drawing on MIF's track record for premiering bold productions that defy convention, artists will be encouraged to create work in new ways, to collaborate across disciplines and blur the boundaries between art and popular culture. Built with flexibility in mind, the design of our venue Aviva Studios is led by Ellen van Loon of the world-leading practice Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). The 13,350 square-metre venue is based around large, open, ultra-flexible spaces that can be constantly reconfigured, enabling large-scale artistic work of invention and ambition that isn’t possible anywhere else in the world. The organisation will continue to stage MIF every other year, at Factory International and other venues and spaces across Greater Manchester. Building on the festival's record of working with communities, as audiences and as participants, Factory International will be a space where local people are actively involved – from participating in flagship commissions, co-designing programmes of activity, to shaping the organisation through involvement in its public forums. Through the Factory Academy, it will also become a major training centre for local people, equipping them with the skills needed for careers in the creative industries and helping to build the technicians, producers and other creative talent that will bring the future alive.

I was part of a pilot mentoring scheme between Factory International and the Manchester women in creative industries network - The Pilkington Club. Last night we were all invited to Aviva Studios for a social to celebrate the end of the mentoring programme. So inspiring to meet younger women passionate about making change in the creative industries and to see fellow mentors Gemma Gibb MCIPR and Holly Ball MCIPR. Thanks to Tanith Rhodes and Rakhi Sinha Jones #mentoring #creativeindustries

Announcing our 2025 season of shows! 🎉 Today, we're announcing highlights from our 2025 season, which includes a series of world premieres at Aviva Studios. We can also share that MIF will return to the city next year from 3-20 July 2025. Read below to find out more about some of our 2025 highlights... -- Hamlet Hail to the Thief | 26 April - 17 May 2025 Shakespeare’s great tragedy and Radiohead’s Grammy Award-winning album collide for a feverish experience that fuses theatre, music and dance. In this frenzied adaptation, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has reworked the band’s critically acclaimed album into a frenetic score that twists and turns, performed by live musicians on stage among the actors. Figures in Extinction | 19-22 February 2025 Experience a moving and timely new work from choreographer Crystal Pite (@crystal_pite) and director Simon McBurney – the culmination of their award-winning dance trilogy exploring the age of disconnection. Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) and Complicité will bring together parts one, two and the never-before-seen part three to Aviva Studios, and it is the first chance to experience the Figures in Extinction series as a whole. Marina Abramović: Balkan Erotic Epic | Autumn 2025 Artist Marina Abramović explores eroticism, spirituality and ritual in a daring large-scale performance work premiering at Aviva Studios. Balkan Erotic Epic blends artforms – bringing together performance, dance and traditional Balkan throat singing to explore and enact the eroticism embedded in Balkan mythology. SHERLOCK HOMES | Autumn 2025 SHERLOCK HOLMES is a brand new play which will premiere at Aviva Studios ahead of West End and Broadway runs. Written by British writing team Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel (The Girl on the Train, The Da Vinci Code), the play will be directed by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Rob Ashford – with choreography from Olivier Award-winner Akram Khan. MIF25 | 3-20 July 2025 The 2025 edition of Manchester International Festival (MIF) will include a host of world premieres and special events by artists from around the world unveiled in venues and spaces across the city. For the second time the festival will also take place at Aviva Studios, including the much-loved Festival Square with free live music and a wide variety of food and drink. It has been incredibly uplifting to be a part of this course, connecting with creatives, and getting a glimpse into the events industry! As a graduate of arts with next to no formal experience in cultural venues, this has been a golden ticket into the world of backstage operations I'd love to be a part of, and now see as a real possibility. Thankyou Factory International for launching this opportunity and miranda Parker for being such an engaging and wonderful educator #FactoryAcademy

Last week our Factory International #FactoryAcademy students got the opportunity to set up d&b audiotechnik KSL system ahead of some testing in one of our large performance spaces. Seen here being taught by our Head of Sound Sorcha Steele. It's part of the ambition of our #EventReady course that students gain access to as much variety as possible, responding to the work that's currently happening at #AvivaSudios.
