🇬🇧 Significant cost disparities in UK fertility care, finds study A new study has found significant cost disparities and information challenges in UK fertility care, highlighting a need for immediate regulatory action. The study, carried out by Queen Mary University of London, explored the financial burden of fertility treatment add-ons, highlighting growing concerns over the reliability of information provided by clinics. According to the university, the study showed that the cost of the most recent fertility treatment ranged from £5,000 to £13,000, with an average expenditure of £11,950 per cycle. Self-funded treatment at NHS facilities cost on average £6,990, while private clinics services reported averaged at £12,977 per cycle. Prof Manuela Perrotta, lead author of the study, commented: “Our findings reveal not only the substantial financial burden on patients but also a concerning lack of reliable information in the fertility sector. Patients are often left navigating complex treatment options and significant costs with limited transparency." Read more: https://lnkd.in/ee78JGSk

🍼 Oxytocin system of breastfeeding affected in mothers with postnatal depression The oxytocin system – which helps release breast milk and strengthens the bond between mother and baby – may be affected during breastfeeding in mothers experiencing postnatal depression, a new study has found. The new research investigated the link between maternal mood and the oxytocin pathway during breastfeeding in mothers with and without symptoms of postnatal depression. The hormone oxytocin is released in both the brain and body, and plays a central role in childbirth and breastfeeding. It is also involved in social relationships, especially intimacy, and the attachment process during infancy. Oxytocin was seen to increase in the breast milk of women without postnatal depression after using a nasal spray containing the hormone, this effect was reduced in mothers experiencing postnatal depression. 💬 Lead author, Dr Kate Lindley Baron-Cohen at UCL Psychology and Language Sciences, said: “Since higher levels of oxytocin in mothers are associated with positive outcomes in a child’s social development and in their mental health, these results point to a possible pathway through which infants of mothers experiencing postnatal depression may be at greater risk of later mental health vulnerabilities.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/g_wrs9Uz

💡 New insights into the origins of ovarian cancer could pave the way for better treatments Researchers have identified a novel trigger of a deadly form of ovarian cancer: a subset of progenitor cells that reside in fallopian tube supportive tissue, or stroma. The discovery of these high-risk cells could pave the way for better approaches to prevent and detect high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC), the most common form of ovarian cancer, which kills more than 12,000 women in the US each year. 💬 Co-senior author Lan Coffman, associate professor at the Pitt School of Medicine and member of Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, said: "Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynaecologic cancer in the Western world, but we currently have no way to detect it early and no prevention strategies apart from surgical castration, which is only indicated in high-risk women.Understanding the underlying biology of how ovarian cancer fo rms is critical to improving outcomes for our patients.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eYTDQn2Z
