ECHA's recent guidance on using non-vertebrate species for bioaccumulation testing of REACH chemicals is a significant advancement. 🌍🧬 As a CRO, we are committed to advancing innovative, ethical, and effective testing solutions. This update opens new pathways for us to support chemical safety assessments while aligning with the 3Rs principles (Reduce, Refine, Replace). #HYBIT #REACH
#AlternativesToAnimalTesting – our Member State Committee unanimously agreed that non-vertebrate freshwater shrimp can be used instead of fish to assess #bioaccumulation in aquatic environments. Using this HYBIT test as the default is another step towards reducing testing on vertebrate animals under #EU_REACH. Check the news - https://fcld.ly/newnams

As vertical farming and controlled environment agriculture (CEA) reshape global food production, there’s a crucial need to tailor food safety standards for these settings. Our Enigma III project, supported by the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC) is tackling this challenge head-on. Working closely with the food supply chain sector, we’re aiming to: 🔬 Develop scientifically validated food safety approaches tailored to vertical farming 🔍 Support due diligence during food safety outbreaks and aid regulators, auditors, and producers 🌍 Bridge the gap in global standards by crafting industry-leading guidance for the UK and beyond If you’re interested in helping to shape grower-led guidance related to this sector, express your interest with Enigma projects director, Adam Bedford. Our newly launched Enigma IV project tackles Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV) - a leading cause of spraing disease in potatoes that renders masses of produce unfit for the market. The tests currently used for pre planting detection of TVR can often be ineffective, meaning growers are in the dark when attempting to manage the issue. To help improve TRV control and prevent crop wastage, Enigma IV will bring together Fera scientists and industry partners to work on: 🥔 Developing a meaningful and validated diagnostic service for infield identification of TRV 🥔 Lowering testing costs and faster turnaround times while reducing waste across the production system 🥔 Providing a meaningful risk assessment package for spraing in potatoes Do you have an interest in improving productivity in the potato supply chain? Get in touch with our Enigma projects director, Adam Bedford to learn more about collaborating on Enigma IV research. #Enigma #PotatoIndustry #PotatoesUK #AgriFood

From Amsterdam to Glasgow and alternative proteins to water. Doesn't seem like there is an obvious link here but I'll be attending the Circular Economy in the Water Sector Crucible hosted by Hydro Nation Chair and Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre on Wednesday this week. Discussing how to embrace a circular economy in the water sector Sustainability isn't just a buzzphrase, it's crucial to feeding (and watering) the world with as little environmental impact as possible. Only through collaboration through whole system approaches can we make a meaningful impact.
