My recent op-ed in The Conversation UK discusses just one of the issues the early closure of the UK's Sustainable Farming Incentive raises: the way we value the future. Yes, there are problems with the SFI scheme. It's expensive and imperfect. It reinforces some of the existing paradigms. It doesn't always address context or scale. But it was something that farmers were actively engaging in. The early closure further erodes farmers' trust in government. And the decision indicates that government discounts both farming and nature, prioritising short-term savings over the long-term cost. A big thanks to Claire Dodd at the Spirits Business for taking time to talk to me about Fielden's regenerative farming 🙏 Fielden planted 1700 acres, of predominantly rye, with 15 farming partners in Autumn 2024. These crops will become the core ingredient for our delicious Fielden whisky once harvested in 2025. They will be floor malted at Warminster (we love Warminster 🙌 ) before being distilled. Hugh Forsyth is our Head of Farming and with his and our farmers help we are working out how best to grow our crops without the use of agrochemicals. We call it "No Chem Regen". It is kind to nature. We also make sure we carry the financial risk of growing this innovative grain, not the farmer. We are also fortunate to be able to invest into Grain R&D as we look to improve both the yield in the field and the yield in the still of our unique rye grain populations. We are monitoring the soil health (and by inference water health), carbon sequestration and the biodiversity in our fields. Post harvest each year, the grain is taken to our bespoke Grain Operations at Tubbs End Farm; we process the grain ready for malting or to be taken back to the farms for replanting.
