Adam Fryer and our intern Ellie Strudwick will be presenting some research they undertook on eel pass substrates at 15:45 today at the EA Annual Fisheries Seminar in Solihull. We hope to see some of our EA friends there! Environment Agency

Some of the team are at the Institute Of Fisheries Management's 2nd International Eel Science Symposium this week. It started in a moving way with a blessing by the Maori contingent attending the conference and has also included a talk by Iain Stewart-Russon, one of Fishtek's fisheries scientists. The talk is on the tidal gate damper (https://lnkd.in/eFKVJyey), a simple and effective device for improving eel (and other fish) passage at tidal gates.

What a fantastic day for some water training!
We had a fantastic day with Spartan Rescue / ISAR3 team in Plymouth. We gained a lot of knowledge and the basic skills required when working near water and how to rescue someone safely in an emergency situation. Fishtek Consulting attended the training and we all enjoyed it. Steve & Dave at Spartan Rescue / ISAR3 were great coaches and learned a lot from the day. Thank you for looking after us. Recently some of the Fishtek team carried out barrier assessments at 7 barriers along the Smestow Brook, from its headwaters in Wolverhampton to near its confluence with the River Stour. The Smestow brook is a major tributary of the River Stour which flows into the River Severn, the longest river in the UK. A considerable issue with this catchment is longitudinal connectivity and Severn Rivers Trust commissioned Fishtek to help find solutions to these barriers. At each site the team gathered essential information from site-specific levels and water velocities to access arrangements and the presence of utilities.

At Fishtek, we pride ourselves on leading the way when it comes to our corporate social responsibility, including reducing our carbon emissions. We continually review our processes to minimise our carbon footprint and are aiming to reach net-zero by 2030. For those emissions we cannot yet prevent, we offset our carbon footprint using both purchased offsets from rigorously selected and certified offsets via OneTribe (see our Impact Page for 2022-2023 here: https://lnkd.in/eZAna8XA) as well as our own tree planting projects. In 2021, we purchased a 4.1 ha plot of species-poor grassland, previously used for sheep grazing, and have since planted it with over 4,000 native broadleaved trees, with support from the English Woodland Creation Offer. These trees will sequester 1,200 tonnes of CO2eq over a 100-year time-period whilst also improving biodiversity in our local area. This commitment should not be underestimated! Each year, we hold tree maintenance days for the ‘Fishtek Forest’ to give the newly planted trees the TLC they need to reach maturity. At this stage, this involves removing ‘weeds’ by hand from within the tubes and around the trees, and ‘uprighting’ any tubes/stakes that have succumbed to the wind, to give them the best chance during the growing season. Last week we completed our seasonal maintenance, with over 15 members of the team lending a hand (and for the first time it was sunny!). Although it’s hard work on the steeply sloping field it’s a brilliant team building exercise and great for general well-being and mental health! In summary, there’s no doubt that it’s a big commitment (you can’t plant and simply walk away), but tree planting (and tree care) is such a rewarding exercise for people and planet, we think it’s worth the hard work! Plant more trees! In the right places of course! 😊.
