Stack Overflow just surveyed 65,437 devs in 185 countries. Of those, only 20% reported being happy at work. 😔 There are a tonne of factors that influence happiness at work (having a good boss, good work-life balance, feeling like you can bring your full self to work…) But the survey zeroes in on some top technical contributors to job satisfaction that are also super important: 1. Improving quality of code and developer environments 2. Learning/using new tech 3. Building environments/architecture Further down the list, we find contributing to open source – which resonates with what we hear from customers. The history of computing is swinging one way and then another. Then back. Rinse and repeat. Barclays recently ran a CIO survey and 83% of enterprise CIOs said they plan to move workloads back to private cloud/on-premise from public cloud. The main reasons were pretty unsurprising: security, flexibility and cost. With the pendulum swinging back to self-hosting, it seems objectively important to build with support for private cloud and on-premise in mind. I've always aimed to keep Flagsmith's infrastructure footprint as compact as possible for this reason. Make it easy for developers to choose how they want (or need) deploy your product.

Having spent most of my career in SaaS, I found it interesting that 83% of enterprise CIOs plan to move workloads back to private cloud/on-premise from public cloud. The history of computing is swinging one way and then another. Then back. Rinse and repeat. This is all according to a Barclays 2024 H1 CIO survey that stated public cloud is here to stay but a lot of workloads are being moved to private cloud/on-premise. The drivers for it weren't surprising - security, flexibility, and costs. Let's see how companies respond as there is a shift back to self-hosting. At Flagsmith, we luckily support all three to give people what they want but with control/security top of mind.
