In 2025, the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) will enter it’s third phase, marking the start of an exciting new chapter in our mission to accelerate the sustainable, equitable and resilient transformation of #FoodSystems. That same year, the world will have just five years left to achieve the UN #SustainableDevelopmentGoals – all of which depend on the delivery of #SDG2, “to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.” Recognizing that FOLU is just one small part of the change that needs to unfold in the world to make #GoodFood4All a reality, we’re doubling down on our strengths as a convenor and inviting fellow food systems changemakers to partner with us to accelerate #ActionOnFood over the next five years. Our new Strategy – released at #UNGA and #ClimateWeekNYC – builds on our learnings to date and set out our community's approach to unlocking brighter food systems outcomes in four key impact areas ahead of 2030. There’s no doubt we’ve achieved great things since our founding in 2017, but we know that our vision of a world in which food systems deliver for people, nature and climate is not possible without a step-change in collective action. So, as approach the mid-way point of the critical decade and look ahead to #COP16 and #COP29, please do take a read of our 2030 strategy and, if you like what you see, join us in our efforts to: 🍎 Improve human health and food security 👩🌾 Support resilient farmer and community livelihoods 🌱 Reduce and reverse nature loss 🌦 Address climate change Read it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/etu9BNzn

We talk a lot about the need for progress. And I wanted to showcase what this looks like in action with a case study from FOLU Indonesia, Koalisi Sistem Pangan Lestari. With the world’s fourth largest population and seventh largest economy, Indonesia’s efforts to reduce Food Loss and Food Waste (#FLW) are important at national, regional, and global levels. In 2021, the country’s National Planning and Development Ministry estimated that FLW caused 7% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions and resulted in $13-15 billion per year of economic loss, about 4-5% of GDP. At the same time, 8% of the population faces food insecurity—a situation that could be solved through improved food recovery and redistribution. With one of the world’s most extensive rain forests, minimizing #FLW can also reduce pressure to deforest. The Indonesian government understands the urgency to act and are currently developing national regulation on this topic. FOLU Indonesia - supported by the National Food Agency and the National Planning and Development Ministry - has developed a national Food Loss and Waste Standard Calculation Method, adapted and locally contextualized from the globally recognised FLW Protocol. We recognize that measuring where FLW is the first step in tacking action to reduce it! This much needed measurement tool was developed to enable independent calculation of food loss and waste, particularly for smallholder farmers and retailers, and will be critical in supporting the implementation of the forthcoming national regulation. FOLU Indonesia has already held a training for the National Food Agency, with representatives of 15 provinces in Indonesia. Similar training for retailers is planned to be held in conjunction with the National Retail Day in mid-November, in collaboration with the Indonesia's Retailers Association. Through this, we are supporting the provinces to develop guidelines and regulations on food loss and waste and for retailers to apply it widely. The work of transforming food systems is hard. Reducing FLW requires a multitude of steps before you get there. But in Indonesia, we now have government support and forthcoming regulation; a measurement protocol to enable smallholder farmers and retailers to start to measure where FLW is taking place - from this we will be able to identify solutions and implement. “There is a subset of countries, largely in the Global North, that are responsible for the majority of emissions from agriculture and land use that haven’t yet begun to incorporate food in their climate commitments,” urges Edward Davey ahead of #COP29. With just one year left to update their Nationally Determined Contributions, “countries with the largest footprints need to lead by example if the food and land use sector is to play its role in mitigating and adapting to climate change.” #COP30 #Belem #NDCs World Resources Institute

Consensus is a key ingredient in the sustainable, equitable and resilient transformation #FoodSystems – especially when working across entire regions with diverse landscapes, geographies and cultures. As we countdown to #COP16, our Colombia platform has been busy supporting public and private stakeholders in Quindío, Antioquia, Valle Del Cauca and Santander to co-create a series of regional roadmaps for collective #ActionOnFood. In Socorro, San Gil and Velez this week, officials from local and regional government participated in a series of workshops to build synergies, navigate tradeoffs and discuss key opportunities for: 🍎 Improving health and nutrition security ♻️ Tackling #FoodLossAndWaste 🌾 Scaling #regenerative agriculture 🌿 Protecting and restoring nature 👨🌾 Building climate-resilient livelihoods. Learn more about the roadmaps via https://lnkd.in/euTC5F-c or reach out to FOLU Colombia Director Claudia Martinez who will be on the ground at #COP16 in Cali later this month 🌱 #ForNature #PeaceWithNature #BiodiversityFramework #30x30 #NaturePositive

Climate change and #FoodLossAndWaste work in a vicious cycle, explains MICHAEL ONCHABO, Director of FOLU Kenya. While rising temperatures increase the risk of crop losses and spoilage, wasted food in landfill sites emits methane – a greenhouse gas with 80x the warming power of CO2. Scaling finance for climate-resilient agriculture and improved storage, handling and distribution technologies is vital to break this cycle – a key action area for leaders at #COP29 next month. I arrived on Sat in NYC for another #ClimateWeek and #UNGA. After an exciting first day yesterday, I'm aware that something feels different this time. Why? Off the back of last year’s food breakthroughs at #COP28, the buzz around what we eat and how it’s costing the planet is more evident than ever before. Excuse the pun, but there’s quite literally a ripeness for #FoodSystems change surging through the Big Apple! Yesterday, we heard from the troika of COP presidencies, the UAE, Azerbaijan and Brazil on their efforts to bring food systems from Dubai to Belem. Tomorrow, we will celebrate Food Day with a host of incredible speakers. If you’re here too, let's supercharge momentum for food systems transformation tomorrow - when I’ll be joining Andy Jarvis, Anna Lappé Dana Gunders and Stacy Pyett for a dynamic Food Day breakout session on all things regenerative agriculture, food loss and waste, healthy diets and sustainable livestock. Details below: 🌱 How can we further strengthen the complementarity between food system transition approaches? 📅 Sept 24 🕘 09:00-13:00 📌 Pier Sixty, New York Thanking Tilt Collective, Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) Bezos Earth Fund, the World Health Organization and Farmed Animal Funders for coordinating an epic day, it's an honor to be involved!
