Business Director - Public Safety & Forensics at Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon UK Ireland & Benelux

Great to be here at the The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences Autumn Conference with a few of our Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon solutions for Public Safety & Forensics. The #MarvelScan portable handscanner from Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence has been busy already, scanning artifacts at 0.02mm with ease, and Daniel Prewitt made light work indeed of resolving the question I posed for him - “from which seat in the auditorium did I take three photos with my iPhone”……..reverse projection in 3DR to a very high accuracy indeed. Just look at the opacity slide between phone photo image and the point cloud!! Really good to be engaging with a different audience to normal, and looking forward to welcoming many of the delegates at our free two day Conference next February, 26th & 27th - where we will also be treating all delegates to an evening of networking and socialising on the fun deck of HMS WARRIOR. Digital investigative #technology helps agencies combat drug trafficking and keep communities safer.    The Michigan City Police Department used our technology to recover vital information from digital devices – connecting several overdose deaths to a single person.     This work motivates us daily at Cellebrite to best serve our customers as they pursue and accelerate #justice

🚨 🚨 3 YEAR SPONSORSHIP RENEWAL 🚨 🚨 It is with a huge sense of pride and commitment that we can today announce the signing of an extended sponsorship agreement between the Public Safety Team at Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon and Cranfield Forensic Institute part of Cranfield University After a mutually successful inaugural year of sponsorship of the #CFI Crime Scene House it simply made so much sense for us both to continue this industry and academia in synergy approach. It has been great to witness first hand the next generations of Forensic Practitioners fully immersing themselves into "the victim's personal space" - the level of realism that simply is not possible with staged rooms and film set style boxes. Within the Crime Scene House there is no escaping the fact that the lounge is connected to the hallway, to the kitchen, the staircase and the bedrooms above. Your entire activity is deeply embedded within the victim's environment. This added level of realism will not only allow for the honing of the technical forensic skillset, but also the (arguably equally as important) interpersonal skillset that the modern forensic practitioner must have to respect and reassure the victim of crime - manners, politeness, humbleness and a balanced air of competence and confidence. It has also been rewarding to see the external companies and Police Forces that have had access to the facility, and benefitted from its permanent and stable availability. To mark the milestone extension agreement, the Crime Scene House facility will now be officially known within the campus as: Leica Geosystems Cranfield House. Thank you to everyone involved in this project, on both sides of the agreement. Here's to the next three years of deepening relationships and rewarding projects. #whenithastoberight #foensicshastoberight Leica Geosystems Public Safety, Security and Forensics #crime #forensic #forensics #csi #crimescene #crimesceneinvestigator #soco #police #investigation #sponsorship #PublicSafety

There can be little doubt that the forensic science sector in England and Wales has entered a new period of instability. This is a key exchange between the Lords and UKAS regarding staffing levels from 2018. With Key Forensics reducing their scientific staff by 20% in 2022/23 FY, and the acquisition of Cellmark by Eurofins, there is deep concern in the forensic community that there is a significant risk of job losses and laboratory closures in the next 12-24 months. We have been repeating this cycle since the first FSS lab shut its doors. Reducing headcount, shutting labs to cut costs, for a loss making business is entirely justifiable from a business point of view. But the rubber hits the road eventually and quality suffers. The question for UKAS is would they be prepared to suspend or remove the accreditation of an FSP for staffing (or any other serious issue) given that to do so would likely result now in a complete collapse of the service in England and Wales? The CMA noted the consequences of their decision if they did not allow the acquisition of Cellmark by Eurofins - they wrote "Some third parties stated that the Merger may have a positive impact by preventing Cellmark’s exit from the market, which could cause widespread disruption to the supply of traditional forensic science services and the criminal justice system in England and Wales. These views have been taken into account where appropriate in this Decision." If UKAS feel the same pressure from "third parties" as the CMA did, and perhaps feel unable to act because the consequences of doing so are so grave, what does this mean for accredited laboratories as a model to ensure the CJS is protected? If accredited laboratories are allowed to behave without fear that they will not lose their accreditation because they have this leverage, there will be no limit to where laboratories could ratchet the quality down. These are the questions politicians should be asking. https://lnkd.in/duqBVHsa

Digital Forensics Academic and Practitioner . Deputy Head of School (KEE) for ECS at University of Southampton #dfir

2 year anniversary at Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton Today marks two incredible years since I joined the University of Southampton, and I can confidently say I’m living my dream! When I was 6 to everyone's shock, I decided I was going to be a professor. For 30 years even when everyone said it was impossible I followed that path (hey I'm autistic when I get an idea it is hard to budge!), and got there! Now, here I am, two years into a fantastic role at an outstanding Russell Group university, with a combined electronics and computer science department. It’s rare to find a place that embraces both hardware and software as much as I do (I even have an electronics bench in my office!). When I joined, everyone was excited to add Digital Forensics to their portfolio, they saw the value in a practitioner like me doing casework alongside academia. Coming here, I found a place where education is as important to them as it is to me, and working with students who share my passion has been an absolute joy. After past experiences where I struggled to fit in outside my team, it’s been such a relief to find a place where I feel at home and valued. I’m now proud to serve as Deputy Head for Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise, and I’ve designed amazing digital forensics labs that I couldn’t be more proud of. But most importantly, the people I work with are nothing short of brilliant, supportive, inspiring, and just as enthusiastic about the work they do. Special huge thanks go out to Tim, Paul, vladimiro, Jonathon, Reena, Dorota, Wendy, Ibrahim, Ben and the SherFox Lab Team for helping make these an incredible 2 years. Special thanks also go to Jacqueline and Dr Debra Carr for believing in me and always being there with wise words, fierce support, and a hug. So, here’s to two years of fulfilling my life's dream and still being on top of the world. I couldn’t be happier! Photo - choosing highlights was so hard. here's some great memories.
