The results are in! 🌟 Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing some of the brilliant winners from our Ancient Tree Photography Competition!🎉 We're celebrating the West of England’s ancient trees to highlight these remarkable landmarks and habitats. We're excited to reveal the winning photo from our 'Celebrating Our Ash Trees' category - 'Ash at Golden Hour'🌳 This beautiful shot was captured by Hannah S. in Langridge, near Bath. In the face of Ash Dieback, a devastating fungal disease threatening these majestic trees, this photograph perfectly celebrates their unique beauty and resilience. Keep an eye out for more competition winners coming soon!👀 This photography competition has been made possible thanks to the Woodland Trusts Emergency Tree Fund. #ancienttreephotographycompetition #photocompetition #treephotography #treephoto #ancienttrees #ashtree #ashdieback #celebratetrees #forestofavon

We bring trees to people and people to trees - across Bristol, Bath and the West of England
About us
Voted Forest of the Year 2023 by our peers, the Forest of Avon is the West of England's Community Forest - transforming our tree and woodland cover and working with communities across the region to enjoy, learn about and care for their local trees and woodlands in many different ways. Part of the largest environmental regeneration programme in England, through Trees for Climate, the Forest of Avon has brought over 450 hectares, creating hundreds of new tree and woodland sites across the region in just over the past 3 years, working in strong partnership with authorities, landowners, charities and many others. For over 30 years, England's Community Forests, of which there are now 15, have been working with communities, authorities, Defra and many other partners to transform landscapes in and around our urban areas. We set the strategic planning for the West of England through the 'Forest of Avon Plan 2021 - A Tree and Woodland Strategy for the West of England' and now we are working to accelerate action needed to double tree cover in the region by 2050 in line with national targets. We currently have up to £3 mn per year to deliver our bespoke fund for trees and woodlands - including all sizes of woodland areas, hedgerows, wood pasture, orchards, natural regenerations - able to fund all costs up to 15 years including infrastructure costs. Do get in touch as this fund and support is available now, for a limited time. We deliver access and public engagement projects as well as woodland management advice. We also have a long- established Woodland Health and Wellbeing programme working with groups in the region who can benefit from expert support in woodland activity. We also work with Forest School trainers and a range of partners to improve education, skills and awareness.

Forest Friday is an outdoor wellbeing project we run with Second Step Bristol. We've been embracing the season and making the most of autumn's natural bounty, such as creating apple prints, making apple chutney and simmering rosehip syrup on the fire! 🍎🍂 As the seasons shift, spending time in nature and focusing on it's gifts not only improves our mood but also helps us cope with difficult changes, like the shorter days. Additionally, the joy of making something that we can enjoy together, such as food, can ease feelings of isolation and loneliness.💚 #mentalhealth #naturewellbeing #wellbeing #outdoors #forestfriday #greensocialprescribing #changingseasons #autumn #woodland #woodlandactivities #forestofavon #bristol

One way to identify trees is by their nuts!🌰 Look for acorns beneath oak trees, shiny brown conkers near horse chestnuts, or beech nuts with their spiky husks. Happy National Apple Day! 🌳🍏 Today, we celebrate the apple tree – a symbol of nourishment, biodiversity and life! 🍎🐝 Our region is famous for its orchards (and cider!) and apple trees are a beloved part of our culture and history in the West of England. 🍏 Their blossoms attract bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators, which help turn their flowers into juicy apples. They also support diverse ecosystems, providing food and shelter for birds, insects, and small mammals. We've created a beautiful illustrated guide on how to care for your fruit trees and support our pollinators.🦋 Click here to download the PDF: https://lnkd.in/eUZeDRFt #nationalappleday #ukappleday #apples #fruittrees #orchards #orchardcare #pollinators #orchardsforpollinators #freeguide #forestofavon #theorchardproject 🎥 Special thanks to the talented team at Another Robot for creating this beautiful animation, featuring illustrations by Jess Knights ✨ Our Orchards for Pollinators project is funded by the West of England Combined Authority. 🌟 Thanks to the Woodland Trust's Emergency Tree Fund for supporting the delivery of the Forest of Avon Plan and the creation of this animation.

Trees offer incredible benefits for both nature and people.🌳 Research shows that spending time in nature significantly improves our health and wellbeing, lowering stress levels, boosting our mood and reducing depression and anxiety. It can also generate positive feelings like joy, calmness, and creativity, while increasing our exposure to vitamin D. This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we wanted to share some joyful moments from our Dementia Wellbeing groups, showcasing how these benefits come to life in the woods!💚 #trees #woodlands #dementiawellbeing #woodlandwellbeing #treebenefits #naturewellbeing #health #wellbeing

We had a wonderful day at our S. Glos Dementia Wellbeing Group with Oscar from Southern Brooks Love Your Patch project!🌳 We had fun drilling and sanding to build solitary bee houses, while also learning about their fascinating lifecycle and the challenges they face. We explored simple ways to support these vital pollinators through small changes in our gardens and everyday habits. 🐝 At our next session, the team from Yate Town Council kindly helped to install the bee homes in Brinsham Park’s conservation area. By supporting our local solitary bee populations, we’re not only protecting nature but also practicing one of the #5WaystoWellbeing – giving back to our community and environment. #wellbeing #healthandwellbeing #dementiawellbeing #beehouses #bees #pollinators #community #beehome #habitatsforpollinators

England’s Community Forests Unite! 🌳 After winning 'Forest of the Year' at last year's conference, we were honoured to host the Englands Community Forests network and our partners right here in our beautiful city of Bristol! With 15 community forests across the country, covering 20% of England (where more than half of the population lives), we are proud to be the nation's leading force in woodland creation.🌱🌳 Partnership is at the heart of our work as community forests, and this year (2023-24) has been a triumph for the network.🌱 Together, through DEFRA's Trees for Climate programme, we've planted an incredible 2,424,697 trees across 1,986 hectares in England. 71% of the woodlands planted have full or partial public access, including schools, meaning that more of our communities will be able to connect with nature. The conference was a true celebration of partnership working and collaboration, allowing us to connect, reflect on our achievements, learn, and generate fresh ideas. And shout out to our team's very own Safia Gilder-Hodgson and Laura Norton, who sparkled as this years conference hosts!✨️ And Clare Olver for expertly putting the conference together.🏆 As a new planting season fast approaches, here's to another successful year across the network.🌳🌳🌳 If you would like to read more about our collective impact in 2023-24, please visit: https://lnkd.in/e76ETiam 📷️ Huge thanks to Daisy Brasington for capturing these photos on the day.
