A new report from the Energy Crisis Commission highlights that the UK is inadequately prepared for the future energy crises, primarily due to its heavy reliance on gas for heating and electricity. This expert group, comprising representatives from organisations such as Energy UK, the CBI, Citizens Advice, and National Energy Action, was established to evaluate the impacts of the recent energy crisis on households and businesses while recommending measures to improve the country’s resilience against similar events in the future. The report indicates that British households and businesses have suffered more than many other European nations due to this dependence on gas. The UK ranks as the second most reliant country in the European Union for gas heating and is joint fifth for gas electricity generation. The Commission highlights that the slow pace of improvements to the energy efficiency of leaky and damp housing, delays in implementing new building standards, and missed opportunities to expand renewable energy sources, such as onshore wind, have compounded the difficulties faced by consumers. Despite the urgent need for change, the Commission asserts that progress in reducing the UK’s reliance on gas has been insufficient. It calls for a clear strategy to transition away from fossil fuels, particularly gas, and emphasises the importance of increasing public investment in home energy efficiency.

Full Power manages commercial energy however we offer advice to clients in the residential sector when requested. The Energy Networks Association has launched a campaign that advises UK households to prepare for winter, sign up for extra support, make a plan, check on neighbours and share helpful information. The campaign focuses on three steps: “prepare, care, share” and we think this is useful advice for businesses. The “prepare” step includes advice on making a plan in case of a power cut. The “care” step focuses on checking in with neighbours, friends, and family who may need help during a power cut. The “share” step involves passing on this information. The campaign encourages people to use social media and other methods to share advice so that more households are ready for winter.

The newly founded National Energy System Operator (NESO), alongside the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments, aims to set out a long-term energy infrastructure plan for the country. The group says that this will be the first strategic spatial plan for energy out to 2050 in the UK as it looks into onshore and offshore infrastructure. The first iteration of the plan will encompass electricity generation and storage from hydrogen and offshore wind farms to pumped storage hydro. Kayte O’Neill, chief operating officer of NESO said: “By setting out pathway options, engaging across government, the regulator, wider industry, interested parties and with communities as well as exploring the needs at a more zonal and regional level we can then identify where and what type of electricity and storage technologies we need to meet our future demand and decarbonisation ambitions.” The group says that this approach will speed up the delivery of clean energy projects while reducing overall system costs, something it said “could in turn bring down bills for consumers.”

Energy Live News reported that electricity bills for small industrial consumers are set to rise £200k by 2026 based on data from Cornwall Insight’s Business Energy Cost Forecast. This marks a 57% rise from the pre-energy crisis figure of just over £350,000 (£151 per MWh). The anticipated increase in costs reflects a rise from the current electricity bills of about £540,000 per year (£232 per MWh). The forecast aligns with the typical April to March contract renewal period for most businesses and highlights that, while energy costs for small industrial businesses have decreased from the highs seen in 2022-2023, which nearly reached £1 million annually, the lingering effects of the energy crisis and geopolitical factors, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, continue to impact the wholesale market. In the coming years, the introduction of new carbon levies and changes in cost structures are expected to contribute to rising electricity prices from April 2026. Experts note that similar trends are expected for both small and large industrial customers. At Full Power, we are deeply committed to the personal growth and wellbeing of our employees. Over the past six weeks, we’ve been thrilled to participate in StoriBoard Wellness Mentor Course, which is rooted in the McKinsey Health Institute's drivers of health. The course focused on six key areas that employers can directly influence to improve team wellbeing: sleep, stress management, economic security, social interaction, mindset and beliefs, and productive activity. Our employees have completed self-paced online modules and participated in weekly webinars that provided valuable techniques and actionable strategies. One of the highlights was an in-person session with the Storiboard team; Natalie Markiewicz and Amy Shakleton. They focused on productive activities, which left us with tools we’re already applying to drive better outcomes. The interactive nature of the course made it both engaging and practical for our team. The course included an optional assessment, and while not mandatory, many employees are choosing to take the assessment to become Level 3 accredited Wellness Mentors. These Wellness Mentors will play a crucial role as internal influencers, shaping our culture and boosting both productivity and positivity across the business. As we approach the end of this course, we’re proud of our team’s dedication and excited about continuing to partner with StoriBoard on a long-term wellbeing programme tailored to the needs of our business. #EmployeeWellbeing #WorkplaceHealth #Leadership #WellnessMentors #FullPowerGrowth

Grab those coats because Autumn has arrived. The energy market is highly sensitive to a variety of external factors, among which weather plays a pivotal role. During the colder months, energy demand typically spikes due to increased heating requirements. This surge in demand is primarily met by natural gas, heating oil, and electricity. Regions with severe winters experience more pronounced peaks, which can strain the grid and increase prices. Daily and hourly fluctuations: Weather conditions not only affect energy consumption on a seasonal basis but also lead to daily and even hourly variations. For instance: Cold snaps - Can lead to sudden spikes in heating demand. Heatwaves - Can cause peak electricity loads due to widespread use of air conditioning. Cloud cover - Can reduce the efficiency of solar power generation, influencing electricity supply.
