On the 13th of March, industry leaders gathered at the Future HealthSpaces Innovation Hub to explore the ever-pertinent topic of standardisation within healthcare environments. The event brought together insights from digital, design, and implementation sectors to discuss how these areas are contributing to more efficient, sustainable, and adaptable healthcare spaces.
David Edwards, New Hospital Programme discussed the Hospital 2.0 model, emphasising how industrialisation can drive standardisation in healthcare environments. The benefits of using these approaches were also outlined; accelerating delivery, reducing costs, and creating adaptable, high-quality hospital spaces that improve both operational efficiency and patient care.
Adam Fahn, East London NHS Foundation Trust focused on the challenges faced in healthcare kitchen facilities, specifically dealing with rodent infestations. Standardising design, incorporating pest control measures, and careful use of materials has helped with overcoming these issues, ensuring improved hygiene, operational efficiency, and compliance.
Garry Fannon FCIOB & Corin Godsmark, BAM UK & Ireland discussed how insights from sectors such as aviation and education have informed their approach to construction and design. They highlighted the role of digital tools such as CAFM systems and digital twins in driving predictive maintenance and creating flexible, efficient, and sustainable healthcare environments.
Geoff Southern, Arcadis highlighted how data analytics and space planning are key to optimising healthcare environments. By using predictive modelling and real-time data, it is now possible to improve patient flow, enhance operational performance, and ensure that healthcare spaces are adaptable to meet evolving needs.
Harley Flett, Future HealthSpaces provided an update on the Future HealthSpaces network, and introduced how the Innovation Hub will be utilised across the industry going forward. A preview of upcoming topics for the rest of the year was also provided.
A special thank you to all our speakers for their insights and for joining the afternoon panel discussion following the Hospital 2.0 bedroom walk-round. Your contributions were invaluable in shaping the future of healthcare spaces.
