Our members provide food and associated products to over 400,000 retail and catering businesses, either by direct delivery or via cash and carry depots. Their customers range from small independent stores to large restaurant chains, and from local coffee shops to hospitals and schools. As well as providing the perfect product mix for each of these diverse businesses, wholesalers support their customers with merchandising materials, business advice, training courses and inspirational ideas. We also work with product suppliers to help them take advantage of the opportunity to grow their brands through partnerships with FWD members. FWD’s membership includes companies which provide services to the wholesale channel, such as market insight, technology and consultancy. Product and service suppliers looking to work more closely with FWD’s wholesaler members can join FWD as Supplier Partners, Supplier Members or Service Providers. “Wholesalers are dream makers.” That was the powerful message given to new starters in wholesale by Bestway Wholesale MD Dawood Pervez as The Federation of Wholesale Distributors ran its latest introduction to the channel at Bestway Park Royal. Dawood said wholesalers are helping thousands of SMEs realise their ambitions of succeeding in business. Fifty newcomers heard from suppliers, insight provider and wholesalers about the opportunity wholesale has for them and their brands. Key takeaways for new suppliers: · Wholesale is the best place for brand innovation, and is a gateway into the rest of the market, and offers creative freedom, good margins and revenue opportunities. Use insight to make informed decisions – Lindsey Hills, Circana · Listen, don’t just sell, get out into depot and understand wholesalers’ needs. Identify opportunities and create products and formats which work for them and their customers. Add value to your service, your products and your conversations on the depot floor– Ian Toft, Paulig Group · Wholesale is a fun, creative sector, offering thousands of purchase opportunities. Wholesalers are people who believe in your brand - they will sell on your behalf, leading to better returns and sustainable growth. Choose execution over scale – Ed Merrett (MBA), PepsiCo · You are so lucky to be working in wholesale! A great supplier focuses on the basics like availability and admin, and cares about the channel. Trust is key, wholesale is all about relationships and emotional connection – Kenton Burchell, Bestway. Another brilliant session which energised new starters to go back to their businesses and crack wholesale.

Response to the Autumn Budget Today’s long-awaited Budget by new Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves will cost the wholesale sector an estimated £110 million in direct wage costs, and increase costs across the board for the UK’s food and drink supply chain. The increase in employers’ National Insurance contributions will significantly impact food and drink wholesalers already facing mounting operational costs. With the Employer National Insurance contribution rate rising from 13.8% to 15%, this change represents an additional £30.9 million in yearly NI costs for the sector. When you add this to the 6% increase in National Living Wage it will see an estimated £110 million added to direct wage costs to the wholesale sector This increase adds financial pressure on businesses striving to support their workforce while maintaining competitive pricing to hundreds of thousands of customers serving communities. We urge the Government to set out what support will be provided to wholesalers, particularly the many small businesses that are the lifeblood of the country, to ensure they can continue to invest in their people and operations without compromising their viability. At a time we should be incentivising businesses to turbocharge economic growth across the economy, almost a quarter of our members may now be forced to reduce investment in other critical areas of their business. Balancing fair pay with the need for growth and reinvestment is challenging, particularly with rising costs across the board. There were some positive steps in today’s Budget that will bolster the wholesale sector. The freeze on fuel duty for another year is a welcome relief for wholesalers facing rising costs, allowing for greater stability in our operations. We also commend the Government’s commitment to increasing support to combat retail crime, which is essential for protecting wholesalers, but we must ensure that wholesalers are included within this to ensure a safe environment for all businesses in the supply chain. Over the coming weeks, we look forward to working closely with the Government to ensure that our members, who are central to driving economic growth, are given the support they need within an uncertain economic climate. #Budget #LabourGovernment #UK #WholesaleSector #FoodandDrink

FWD Future Leaders find out how to 'Get Ahead in Wholesale' What a great day we had with some of our Future Leaders Forum this week! Members joined us at Heineken’s stunning offices in London this week for their autumn session: Get Ahead in Wholesale. The group heard from Adam Turner, Customer Director at Heineken and FLF member Gabi Conti about the position of wholesale in Heineken’s business and also shared some interesting facts about the company and Freddy Heineken. The FLF group then embarked on interactive workshop sessions: ‘Be Seen, Be Heard’, with Jill Livesey, MD, Lumina Intelligence; ‘Get Noticed, Get Promoted’ with Ben Cooper, National Account Controller, Swizzels Matlow, and ‘Do Good, Get Ahead’ with Rich Howell, Founder of Marvel FMCG. The session leaders shared insight into the value of building partnerships, the core skills needed to develop within the sector, networking tips, and the importance of ‘career chiefs’ in progressing their own career. A hugely insightful event with networking across the board, we are delighted to deliver these events for the future leaders of the sector. Look out for more coming in 2025. Have a great weekend all! Our UK Sales Director, Reuben Ash, recently attended an event hosted by #FWD ‘Category #Networking Dinner: #Alcohol’ at the DoubleTree by Hilton London - Tower of London which was very enlightening especially as we have Alcohol Companies like The HEINEKEN Company as clients in other geographies. The event started with an overview by Katie Gallagher, Insight lead from Lumina Intelligence and was followed by a lively panel discussion with Adam Turner (Customer Director from #Heineken), James Stocker (Sales & Marketing Director from Halewood Artisanal Spirits), David Hayward (Sales Director from #SmashedDrinks), Kenton Burchell (Group Trading Director from Bestway Wholesale) & Daniel Haddon (Commercial Director from #Champers) and ended with a fantastic dinner and drinks.🥂 We are very much looking forward to seeing how this partnership with FWD grows. 🌟 Reflecting on the Diversity in Wholesale Conference 🌟 It’s been almost a week since the The Federation of Wholesale Distributors Diversity in Wholesale Conference and after reflecting on the wealth of insights shared, I wanted to highlight some key topics that resonated with me: 🦩 The Flamingo Analogy - Jonny Jacobs discussed how flamingos lose their pink colour when under extreme stress, signalling their need for space and rest. Imagine if we had visible signs like this to help identify when others are going through a tough time. This emphasises the importance of being more mindful of those around us. 💡 Purpose in Diversity - My main takeaway: think deeply about your purpose when supporting diversity. What difference do you want to make? We also need to consider: · Social media’s role in mental health · The impact of the cost of living on well-being · Diet and its effect on mental health 🌱 Creating Safe Spaces for Authenticity - A recurring theme was the need for workplaces to be safe spaces where individuals can truly be themselves. As an introvert, I have done a lot of learning about myself and I am starting to feel confident highlighting that as a key strength of mine. Fostering an environment where all employees feel comfortable sharing opinions without judgment is crucial for a diverse workforce. ⚡ “The spark is going to be found in the friction” - This phrase was powerful. Encouraging teams to lean into differences and appreciate individual strengths will allow for more innovative thinking. True innovation comes when we create space for diverse perspectives to thrive. 🔑 Accessibility ≠ Inclusion - A crucial distinction! Just because a workplace is accessible doesn’t mean everyone feels included. Small actions, like open conversations and proactive thinking can make all the difference in making sure everyone feels valued. 🛠️ Allyship in Action – Allyship is not self-defined. Exploring the barriers and enablers of allyship: · Fear ➡️ Be Brave · Ignorance ➡️ Stay Curious · "It’s not my responsibility" ➡️ Take Ownership · "It’s always been this way" ➡️ Challenge Yourself 💪 Resilience is a Choice - Stress is often a perceived fear rather than real danger. We choose resilience, and it’s something to actively work on. One tip I loved: when feeling stressed, find 3 small tasks you can do right away to regain a sense of control. Remember: you decide if you are good enough. 🧘♀️ The Power of Breathwork - I was reminded of the incredible benefits of breathwork for both mental and physical health. It reduces stress, improves circulation, and sharpens focus—something simple yet so powerful for our well-being. Reflecting on these topics has been incredibly valuable, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to engage with such insightful conversations and people at the conference.

Diversity in Wholesale conference is a big highlight in the FWD calendar since we launched it last year, and on a personal note, very important to me! It was a huge privilege to design and put together the content for this festival of D, I & E this year. Huge thanks to all of our incredible contributors set out in our post below. But a further (huge) shout out to Amanda Nutt from Corin & Co who worked closely with me all year and advised on the right speakers and workshops covering some incredibly important topics. The feedback has been staggering, we are very proud, and very pleased the new DiW initiative has gained real traction in our sector, and so much support!! Creating a diverse, inclusive and equitable workplace is not a 'nice to have' - it's essential both morally and commercially. Ignore this culture shift at your peril.
Thank you to everyone who came to our Diversity in Wholesale Conference 2024!
