New data reveals that 64% of adults in Great Britain who have experienced any problems with gambling have never spoken to anyone about it. Out of those, 39% attribute their silence to feelings of stigma, such as shame, guilt, and fear of judgement. Gambling Minister Stuart Andrew said: “Too often we see the devastating impacts of harmful gambling, and our white paper outlines a host of new measures we're implementing to protect those most at risk. A key element of our plans is the introduction of a statutory levy on gambling companies to raise sufficient, sustainable and trusted funding for research, prevention and treatment of gambling related harm." "Stigma is the biggest barrier preventing people from seeking help, and I welcome GambleAware’s vital campaign which is raising awareness of the issue and helping people get the support they need.” Let's open up about gambling.

A recent article from The Guardian sheds light on research, showing that Premier League fans were exposed to nearly 30,000 gambling messages in just one weekend. Alexia Clifford, GambleAware Chief Communications Officer said: “We’re concerned about the normalisation of gambling for children and young people. The report released today is particularly worrying as we know that children’s exposure to gambling advertising and marketing when watching sport can lead to a greater risk of gambling harm later in life. That’s why we’re calling for a ban on all gambling marketing in stadiums, health warnings on all gambling adverts to make it clear that gambling can be addictive, and a ban on gambling adverts on TV before the 9pm watershed to protect young and vulnerable people. In our efforts to spread awareness and understanding on gambling harm and various ways it affects different groups of people, we are inviting research organisations and/or academics to submit proposals for two projects linked to gambling marketing. Here are the current research opportunities, we'd like to: •Test the appeal of celebrity ambassadors to children and young people (aged 11-17) through quantitative research methods to determine how the ASA’s criteria for what appeals to this group can be refined to better prevent harm. For more information please click the link below: https://rb.gy/miadf8 •Explore the impact of operator-led safer gambling campaigns across a range of outcome measures (e.g., behavior change metrics alongside broader attitudinal shifts) For more information please click the link below: https://rb.gy/hpfry9

Happy to announce we have released another report on gambling related stigma. This report outlines findings from a secondary analysis of data collected using the Gambling Perceived Stigma Scale (GPSS) and the Gambling Experienced Stigma Scale (GESS).   By applying various statistical analysis this research has resulted in: validating both scales to measure stigma in GB, producing scoring thresholds for the scales to make interpretation of the results easier, producing a “short form” for one of the scales to reduce burden on respondents answering the scales and implementing non-reductive language on the scales to reduce stigma when collecting data.   All positive outcomes that contribute to our wider commitment to build the evidence base of stigma and gambling harms in GB.   To learn more about this research click the link below: https://lnkd.in/eCRfvNrD

Earlier this week, we released our Annual Treatment and Support Survey. The report highlights how gambling harms experienced by others in their household can have long-lasting effects on children, finding that around 1.6 million children live with adults who experience ‘problem gambling’. The report calls for tailored measures to assess and mitigate gambling harms among children and young people, recognising that their experiences and vulnerabilities differ from those of adults.
