🎮 Another exciting week at our Games Industry Bootcamp! In our courses, we emphasise "agency" - yes, because that's required by the world of work but also feelings of control over actions and their consequences are essential to mental health. Here's what our aspiring developers, community managers, QA testers and writers have been up to: 🖊️ Kicked off with an inspiring session from Daniel̸̛̻̝̩̥̲̮͂͐͌̎͘ Griliopoulos (RimWorld: Anomaly, Endless Dungeon, Total War: Warhammer III) who sparked our students' creative writing journey. 🤝 The brilliant Kate Lander taught essential networking skills, empowering our cohort to build meaningful professional relationships on LinkedIn. 🎯 Four teams showcased their ideas for mini-games to Robert Brough from Dogbox Games - from haunted pinball to vinyl-themed endless runners! 🎲 Victoria Boyce from Third Kind Games launched our Design Pillars project, sharing invaluable insights on systems design and career development. Why this matters: We're building more than just technical skills. We're fostering agency, creativity, and that essential inner drive that the late, great educationist John W. Gardner spoke about - the kind that powers both personal growth and industry innovation. Next week the worlds of foley libraries, digital tools, portfolios and more. #GameDev #GamesIndustry #GameDesign #TechEducation #BootcampLife #GameDevelopment #videogames #careers HT Community Managers Jessica Goldfinch Kay Constable & Samii Jayne. And congrats to Martyna Dzienis on her new role as a junior game artist.

We have so enjoyed working with Career Connect in Manchester and Salford in the last year, as part of their career support for young people. HT Sheila Clark Chloe Elliott Nicholl Hardwick Paula Isherwood Traci Rabaca #videogames #skills #careers
Our 2023/24 Impact Report is here! …and we’re proud to report a near 20% year-on-year increase in the number of people we’ve reached! In 2023/24, we came into contact with 97, 719 people across the UK, with the aim of empowering them to move forward in employment, education or training – wherever they are in their journey. 🤝 😊 ⬆️ We generated an additional social value of £8million through activity such as the creation of apprenticeships, supporting responsible regional business growth, and reducing our environmental impact. 🌍 We know there’s always more to do to create a society where every individual realises their full potential – and we’re certainly not stopping here. But today, we’re celebrating the positive impact our dedicated teams have had on the lives of those we have supported. Thank you to the wonderful participants and staff that appear in our video! Digital industries are a critical growth area of the UK economy. To make good on the opportunity, we need to help young people overcome the fact that some 50% do not go to university. We recently kicked off our newest Bootcamp course for video game players in the Midlands. Over 7 weeks, our hardy adventurers will explore the landscape of the games industry and jobs market that can make use of their native talent. So far, participants have met professionals who've worked on GTA2, Command and Conquer, Sea of Thieves and the new Fable. Yasmina Fadel, a new studio entrepreneur, has inspired them. They've been set projects to design a wacky and whimsical mini-game for a game in production by Robert Brough at Dogbox Games. And they've had employability support from our skills wizard Kate Lander. Jake Britten supports people on our programmes as lead tutor, alongside our Community Managers - Kay Constable, Samii Jayne and me. Young people who don't follow a degree or apprenticeship have very limited options available to improve their skills - and by extension, their life chances. This is what we're addressing, working with the UK economy's hidden tribe of digital natives - players of video games. - Jessica Goldfinch #videogames #careers #digitalindustries #UKskills #employability #jobs

This book is a must for people interested in video games, neurodiversity and work in the intelligence/cyber sector. Robert Hannigan points to personality types best suited to a career in intelligence, and high up the list are those who enjoy games and puzzles. That's because the work is, as he describes it, "a continuum of puzzle-solving and creative play." Hannigan also sees neurodiversity as a positive career credential. Not least in combatting cognitive bias. Many video gamers we work with at Game Academy would like a career in cyber. Some would bite hands off to work in intelligence. A few are Mandarin or Russian-speakers who can't nail down a career and are on Universal Credit. It's a small but telling leak in the UK labour market. #cyber #careers #videogames #talent #neurodiversity
Chairman, BlueVoyant International; CyberSecurity Adviser; former Director GCHQ who established the UK National Cyber Security Centre
A pleasure to take part in JamesTaylor.me ‘s excellent Supercreativity podcast, discussing neurodiversity, puzzling, innovation and other topics. Available on Spotify etc. With thanks to The Economist and BBC 5 Live’s nihal Arthanayake for their excellent reviews of the book. Proceeds to Bletchley Park Trust. #neurodiversity #cybersecurity #innovation #puzzling #AI #creativity #problemsolving https://lnkd.in/euahnsta

We were so pleased to have joined this event. Good to hear of a proportion of companies looking to hire in 2025, totally inspired by Hayley Blundy and FuturLab's work on supporting the #wellbeing of staff and players and Pierre Escaich on #neurodiversity in the games workforce. A light shone on HR but also burgeoning #socialimpact in the #videogames industry. HT GamesIndustry.Biz
The HR summit was inspirational, educational and surprising in equal measure. Huge thanks to GamesIndustry.Biz for making it happen brilliantly despite the huge changes within their own organisation and to Liz from Amiqus - Games Recruitment Specialists for sponsoring. HR isn't my usual tribe but this audience, dominated by fabulous women powers the games industry with little recognition outside this event and often has too little support. I learned: - 98% of HR have felt burned out only -16.7% of companies are looking to decrease their workforce in 2024 but 33.3% were looking to increase their workforce - We need to be more specific when talking about AI, is it generative, machine learning or games AI? - OD is important - Skills degrade quickly Thanks to Christopher Dring , James Batchelor, Emma Smith (Pg Dip CIPD) Sarah Brewster, Tommy Thompson, Steve Cuss, Perri Lewis. Phil Attfield Sarah Sorrell and huge congrats to Harinder Sangha. What you have acheived with team culture is off the scale. p.s. I need to remember to take more photos

Last week week saw the end of our journey with the fabulous folks from Career Connect in Manchester. It's just the latest edition of a working partnership we love. Where did all the time go? We kicked off the final lap with a talk from Maciej Szczerba, a tools software engineer who's worked on Fall Guys and Fortnite and taught programming using tools such as Scratch and even robots using LEGO WeDo and EV3 (excuse me whilst I make some purchases!). Kate Lander provided her knowledge and guidance gifting links and CV advice galore! And last but not least we were joined by Twitch streamer Clonekorp AKA Brett Davis (https://lnkd.in/e3m5qYE4) to help us navigate the world of monetisation, taking us from growing content to turning it into a career. And with that our time has come to an end. It's not game over, just level complete. See you at the next adventure! - Jessica Goldfinch, Game Academy :) #videogames #skills #careers #streaming #employability #programming

Really interesting post this: on games as a useful support to engaging people in important life issues. At Game Academy, we support people to identify, grow and exploit the talent that they deploy in game to help develop their life skills and opportunities. It's more relevant than ever as the metaphor of the world as game increasingly shapes behaviour and commerce. HT Isabel Jones Sarah Parker Catch22 #videogames #skills
In this week’s blog, Isabel Jones, Partnerships Manager at Catch22, looks into the strengths and limitations of using games as a tool to talk about complex subjects such as child exploitation and online harms.
