🗞️ As we celebrate #ProBonoWeek, Legal Futures reports that both demand for, and provision of, pro bono legal services are increasing. The Bar's pro bono charity Advocate has reported a 25% increase in applications for help in its core casework service in the year to September 2024. Our most recent Barristers' Working Lives survey stats show that 49% of barristers had undertaken pro bono work. Chair Samuel Townend KC encourages all barristers no matter what stage of your career to consider making pro bono part of your practice. Senior Partner Moore Barlow/Head of Major Trauma.Chair:Mary Seacole Trust.Founder U-triumph. Diversity Legal Awards Lawyer of the Year 2019 BTA Senior Leader Award 2023.Don’t just aspire to climb the ladder,be the ladder
So many ladders in a room! Huge thanks to Mark Robinson & Garden Court Chambers for the “Black Silk” event. It was an honour to meet Rudolph Walker CBE and watch clips from “Black Silk” followed by a brilliant Q&A with panellists like Leslie Thomas KC, Kevin Metzger, Laurie-Anne Power KC (Host) Keir Monteith KC, and HHJ Judy Khan KC and to see inspirations such as Terence Channer Stephen Akinsanya Rudolph Walker CBE’s 1985 portrayal of a black barrister in the BBC TV drama Black Silk based on the legendary late great Rudy Narayan, was a reminder of the necessary resilience of black lawyers both historically and still now, particularly at The Bar. Inexplicably the BBC only produced one series and refused to repeat it. It should now do so. As I finish a month of talks, I finish as I started - we must not just aspire to climb the ladder but be the ladder. Organisations (including the BBC) have an immense role to play in building ladders - repeat Black Silk and produce more such dramas, visibility matters. A truly wonderful inaugural event. Special shout out to my brother in law Mark Robinson for producing and directing the Black Silk event last night at Garden Court Chambers. It wasn't just the rice and peas and chicken plantain and mini Jamaican patties that was so impressive. It was seeing so many of my other black brothers and sisters in law - heavy hitters (and panellists) like Leslie Thomas KC, Kevin Metzger, Laurie-Anne Power KC (Host) Keir Monteith KC, and HHJ Judy Khan KC Veteran actor Rudolph Walker CBE was also on the panel. His 1985 portrayal of a black barrister in the BBC TV drama Black Silk based on the legendary late great Rudy Narayan, was the inspiration for the event. The only black lawyer I heard of as a child was Rudy Narayan. The uncompromising thorn in the flesh of the legal establishment. A brilliant advocate whose outspokenness was incompatible with him taking silk. Rudy Narayan refused to kiss the ring. No surprise that the event was sold out. Looking forward to the next. Shout out to Trevor D Sterling for such a sterling speech. Was good to see Stephen Akinsanya, Sharon Thomas (founder of Black Counsel Forum) and Anthony Graham. 1 November 2024

As October has come to an end and November begins, this month, I was able to attend two wonderful events with two great Chambers, with some of my lovely colleagues. Thank you to 3DJB for the invite to their junior lawyers event and Garden Court Chambers for their 'Black silk' event. I have left both events feeling encouraged and hopeful for the road ahead as a Newly Qualified Solicitor. Happy November!
