Is your pet's flea treatment harming birds? Research found fipronil in 100% and imidacloprid & permethrin in 89% of nests tested. A higher number of unhatched eggs or dead chicks were found in nests containing a higher number of insecticides. At the weekend I combined my Garden Organic and Parish councillor roles to deliver West Hunsbury’s first Climate Action Workshop. 😀 What a fabulous visit to the amazing #heritageseedlibrary (HSL) A jewell in Garden Organic crown 🍅 HSL maintains and conserves the national collection of heritage and heirloom vegetables not widely available, 👩🌾 has a network of over 200 #seed guardians who help make it a #living seed bank 🍆 has over 800 varieties (and yes - including aubergine - the Szechuan no less 🤩 🌱 And a brilliant team - led by Catrina Fenton (lovely to see you today!) Remember back in 2022 when the previous administration promised to ban the sale of horticultural peat by 2024 and then nothing happened? Here we are with a new administration in 2025 and - (not that) mirabile dictu - nothing has happened. Again. While we try to get things moving legislatively, there is another way to go at this. By shopping #PeatFree we can encourage those retailers that are doing the right thing that they will benefit from doing that right thing. The catch, of course, is that there's no requirement for labelling whether or not a given product - houseplants, potted herbs, mushrooms - has peat in its supply chain. Recognising this, The Wildlife Trusts recruited a cadre of volunteer Peat Inspectors for some sleuthing on the clarity (or lack thereof) of peat labelling. They now have a list of 56 retailers they'll be contacting - via open letter - to ask them to voluntarily up their game. As well as giving consumers the information they need to purchase with a peat free conscience, this would enable us to highlight those retailers that are taking things in the right direction. Coventry University’s Centre for Agroecology, Water & Resilience is leading a £1.9m project aimed at creating a more sustainable food system. In collaboration with the Open Food Network, Garden Organic and Social Farms & Gardens, the project will support food hubs across the UK and use knowledge sharing and innovation to transform how public sector organisations source food. With a focus on ‘place-based procurement’, the project will examine how to improve opportunities for food buyers in schools, hospitals, and other public sector organisations to include sustainable, locally sourced food in their menus.
