New research from SchoolDash, commissioned by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, examines how we understand educational disadvantage across schools in England. Current measures, such as free school meals and Pupil Premium, often oversimplify disadvantage and miss the complexity of need that schools experience. This study proposes a more nuanced model, clustering schools based on a wide range of socioeconomic factors, from regional deprivation indexes to participation in higher education. Through this lens, schools fall into six distinct categories, each with unique needs. This approach highlights significant differences among schools with similar Pupil Premium rates but vastly different local contexts, enabling a more tailored response to challenges like pupil attainment and teacher shortages. Over the coming months, Gatsby and SchoolDash will continue to explore this model and its implications for policy, aiming for more precise solutions to reduce educational inequality across the UK. https://lnkd.in/epTBu5mf

Great advice from T level alumni Shayhana M.. Starting with Placer CPD courses to a T level industry placement at Gatsby Charitable Foundation progressing to a degree apprenticeship at University of Exeter with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Amazing 🎉#tlevels #apprenticeships #skillsforlife
T Level to Degree Apprenticeship is a great pathway for young people to take, but what was it like for those early pioneers who took a chance on the T Level when they were first introduced? Honoured that Shayhana M., one of the first T Level digital pioneers studying at La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls' School, is sharing her story on our Placer Inspiration Blog today: https://lnkd.in/ehUM-P7r #tlevels #pioneers #careerpathways

Last week, members of the Gatsby team visited Vienna to explore Austria's technical education system. We met with the organisations responsible for the occupational standards and employer inputs which underpin both classroom-based technical education qualifications and apprenticeships, as well as businesses, teachers, students and apprentices. Thank you to all who hosted us, particularly Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung for compiling the visit programme and British Embassy Vienna for building our understanding of the cultural and political context. Thanks also to colleagues from Bridgwater & Taunton College, Solihull College & University Centre, Cambridge Regional College, Chesterfield College, and IfATE (Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education) who joined us. This trip forms part of our programme to identify features of strong technical education systems to inform how we look at our own approaches in England.

A fantastic morning at the Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire Institute of Technology Topping-Out Ceremony! Always a pleasure to get out of the office and visit #InstitutesofTechnology, but even better when I get to throw on a high-vis and hard hat! 👷♂️🚧 Huge congrats to Georgina Barnard MSc and the whole team—excited to see the finished space and visit again when the doors officially open! 🍾 Gatsby Charitable Foundation | The National Network of Institutes of Technology | Ginny Page
