GCRE will provide world-class research, testing & certification of rolling stock, infrastructure & new rail technologies
About us
The Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) is a new, purpose-built rail innovation facility being built in South Wales that will undertake world-class research, testing and certification of rolling stock, infrastructure and innovative new rail technologies - something that currently doesn’t exist on a single site in either the UK or in Europe. Operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the facility will include two electrified test loops, one a 6.9km high speed rolling stock track and the other a 4km track for heavy infrastructure testing. Opening in 2025 it will become the UK’s first ever net zero railway, supporting the innovation needed to aid the UKs path to net zero and, crucially, helping lower the costs of major rail infrastructure projects. Located on a former open cast mine in the Dulais Valley, it will create long-term, high-quality jobs and become a magnet for other, high-quality investments and R&D. Planning permission has been secured for the project and its 24-hour, seven day a week operation, with construction beginning in early 2023. Site clearance has already commenced, and an experienced management team is in place to drive the project forward.

We've been getting some quite amazing drone shots of the Global Centre Of Rail Excellence site recently. The clear weather has allowed the full drama and beauty of the site to be seen. These were taken by our very talented Antony Llewellyn just in the last few days. We'll try and post more of these drone shots over the coming months. Stunning location. #GCRE #GlobalCentreOfRailExcellence

“Every country in the world is looking at the future of their economy and asking where their unique strengths are. GCRE offers the UK a way to develop its unique strengths and to become a global leader in rail innovation. That will be possible because we will have a facility nobody else in Europe, and arguably the world will have. The UK can develop an industrial strength in rail innovation that is unique, just as we have with aerospace and financial services. The UK can lead the world in this sector as an economic strength for the future.” In the latest Business Focus magazine, Global Centre Of Rail Excellence Chief Executive Simon Jones gives an update on work to develop Europe's premier site for rail innovation in South Wales - a world class facility for rail research, testing and certification. In his piece, Simon outlines the four missions that lay behind the GCRE vision - to rebuild local prosperity; to make transport better; to pioneer a net zero railway and to renew an amazing place. It's good to see early collaboration between the Welsh and UK Government on rail reform and tangible commitments to improve infrastructure and deliver better services for passengers. As a development funded by the two governments, we also know that the Global Centre Of Rail Excellence is a priority for both administrations and we look forward to playing our part in securing positive changes in rail over the next few years. https://lnkd.in/exPVDii8 #Rail
