Earlier in the week I had the pleasure of joining some of the DHL Supply Chain and Network Rail teams at Euston to see just how much goes on behind the scenes to ensure that Avanti West Coast and their passengers receive the most reliable on board catering services possible. What really stood out was the customer focus, team work, current and also future innovations which DHL are looking to bring, which not only ensure the passenger gets the best services and experience, but also bringing benefits supporting performance and punctuality for the operator themselves. Thank you for inviting Rail Forum Steve Atkins FCILT, great to meet Jason Bailey and Rebecca Page from the NR performance and logistics teams and also so good to meet Paul Bramall from DHL and discuss where there will be some real value for him and his team in being even more involved in some of our upcoming Rail Forum activities and events 👏 👏

We unpacked the future of rail freight with a stellar lineup of speakers and vibrant discussions. Huge thanks to all who joined us and made it unforgettable! 💡 Here’s a rundown of the highlights: 🟣 Maggie Simpson OBE (Rail Freight Group) celebrated 4% freight growth and new flows, urging collaboration and consultation responses to secure GBR’s future. 🟣 Zoe McLernon (Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT) Transition Team) outlined freight’s rising profile under GBR, spotlighting a track access policy that cut thousands of lorry trips and tons of CO2. 🟣 Vincent Barry (Groupe CAT) showcased a rail breakthrough with Toyota, slashing emissions by 60%, though regional hurdles persist. 🟣 Peter Gibbons MBE (Network Rail) shared the moving story of delivering aid trains to Ukraine, overcoming wartime logistics to support a nation. 🟣 David Burley MIRO (Rail Operations Group) partenred with Stadler on the Class 93, trialing high-speed freight to transform UK logistics. 🟣 Nicolas Edwards (Deutsche Bahn & RSSB) tackled ETCS drivability challenges, pushing for driver-focused fixes in freight tech. 🟣 Chris Swan (Tarmac) emphasised rail’s role in urban construction supply chains, calling for more capacity and digital upgrades. 🟣 Martin Gleadow (Velociti Solutions) explored digital tools to optimise freight paths, enhancing capacity with data-driven insights. 🟣 Alan Peters (Connected Places Catapult) unveiled the Freight Innovation Cluster’s impact, from drone trials to £100M in funding for greener freight. From decarbonisation wins to tech innovations, today showcased rail freight’s vital role in a sustainable future. 📢 WRAPPING UP - TESTING RAIL INNOVATION WITH HERITAGE PARTNERS What an incredible day yesterday at the Testing Rail Innovation with Heritage Partners event hosted at Great Central Railway! 🙏 A huge thank you to everyone who joined us as we explored how heritage railways can power cutting-edge rail innovation. 💡Here’s a quick recap of the brilliance shared: 🟣 Dr Joanna White (National Highways) highlighted the shared challenges of aging infrastructure and the role of innovation in safety, sustainability, and seamless road-rail integration. 🟣 Oliver Clamp (Network Rail) showcased the value of heritage railways like Great Central Railway as testbeds, spotlighting international partnerships and future testing opportunities. 🟣 Dr Dave Gent (ECSL) brought operational insights and shared examples of how innovations trialled on heritage railways have been successfully applied to major infrastructure projects. 🟣 Ian Evley, Innovate UK’s Innovation & Growth Specialist urged us to embrace structured, market-driven innovation cycles—solving real-world problems with purpose. 🟣 Jeremy Allen (Connected Places Catapult) outlined how they’re enabling SMEs to innovate with Network Rail, measuring success through jobs and economic growth. 🟣 Robert Forde ChPP (Global Centre Of Rail Excellence) introduced their game-changing test facility in Wales, tackling the global gap in infrastructure testing. 🟣 Russell Bradley (Great Central Railway) shone a light on the organisation as a heritage gem with modern potential—offering safe, certified testing up to 75 mph and ambitious expansion plans.
