    An exhilarating and inspiring morning at #LiveServiceGames2024 today, meeting the absolutely amazing community behind many of the world's leading live service experiences. Everyone I met today was welcoming, open, keen to learn and willing to share their own hard-won experiences. From the inspirational story behind #HellDivers2, shared by Linda Tiger, COO at Arrowhead Game Studios to the iterative learning experience of Johannes Mang , Head of Studio at Rovio Entertainment Corporation in Stockholm, I learnt so much from these pioneers. I won't do justice to the whole conversation, so I'll pick out a few takehomes: All games, and particularly live service games spike at launch then fall away before finding their market fit. This creates some unique challenges - how do you create infrastructure that scales with a massive launch but then scales back in terms of cost when things settle down? How do you lead and motivate a team for whom launch is just the beginning of a long, slow and often painful process of learning what works and what doesn't. Live service games live (or die) by the way that players interact with the game. Everyone today spoke about the vital importance of realtime data from players, of working with player communities pre-launch and of continuing to adapt to the player community once the game is live. Several people spoke about the challenges ahead of platforms come to dominate, and in the process to sever the connection between the developer and the player community. Live service gaming is about long-term sustainability in the deepest sense - which requires a different mindset from the traditional "make a game, release the game" model. Its not about a binary choice of free-to-play Vs premium - there's an entire spectrum of monetisation strategies. The real art is developing a strategy that exists in a sympathetic symbiosis with the nature of each individual game and the community it aims to reach. Today is (I believe) the first event dedicated entirely to live service gaming. From the conversations around the room today, it absolutely won't be the last. Ukie is delighted to work with the Live Service Gaming Summit to support the UK video game industry.
