We’re working to enable faster and deeper genomic diagnosis & research, to bring genomic healthcare to all who need it.

About us

Genomics England works with the NHS to bring forward the use of genomic healthcare and research in Britain to help people live longer, healthier lives. Genomics is a ground-breaking area of medicine that uses our unique genetic code to help diagnose, treat and prevent illnesses. Thanks to advanced technology, scientists can now compare many people’s genetic code to make new discoveries that continually improve genomic healthcare. In 2013, Genomics England and the NHS launched the 100,000 Genomes Project, demonstrating how genomics insights can help doctors across the NHS, and building a foundation for the future by assembling a unique dataset. Genomics England is now supporting the NHS to deliver genomic testing for patients as part of routine healthcare, and providing the health data and technology that researchers need to make new discoveries and create more effective, targeted medicines. We work with thousands of people – patients, doctors and scientists – to increase our collective knowledge and enable faster and deeper genomic research, to bring genomic healthcare to all who need it.

New research published in the British Journal of Cancer shows that “whole genome sequencing is a game-changer for diagnosis and treatment of patients with sarcoma”. Whole genome sequencing changed the diagnosis in about one third of patients and enabled a third to be switched to a more personalised, targeted treatment. Dr Alona Sosinsky, co-author and Scientific Director for Cancer at Genomics England, said: “This publication is a further example of how implementation of whole genome sequencing as a clinical test within the healthcare system has unlocked so many exciting opportunities for precision oncology and moving further away from a one size fits all approach to cancer care for patients’ benefit.” Read more via this link: https://ow.ly/l4YL50SC71j

The Genomics England Research Summit showed the difference that genomics can make to people’s lives through some of the most impactful real-life examples seen anywhere in the world. It highlighted the UK's leading role in genomics with breakthroughs in diagnosing rare conditions, cancer treatment, and leveraging AI in healthcare. “This year’s Summit was a brilliant showcase of why we get up each morning and why we believe the UK is the place to ask big questions and innovate in genomics” - Dr Rich Scott, CEO of Genomics England. As the 2024 Genomics England Research Summit comes to a close, we would like to say a huge thank you to all our speakers, sponsors, and attendees who have made this summit a resounding success. Through insightful conversations, we have witnessed the power of collaboration, the importance of diversity in research, and the potential of genomic data in transforming healthcare. For our final panel session of the day, we heard from some of the major genomic research infrastructures. Natalie Banner hosted UK Biobank, All of Us Research UArizona-Banner Health, Our Future Health UK and Genomics England - as they discussed the potential and challenges of bringing data together at scale, and the huge research possibilities to drive benefits for patients, populations and health systems. #GERS2024

💬 “I always say that having a child with a cancer diagnosis feels like you’ve been standing on a trap door all these years without knowing. Then after the diagnosis, you are in freefall. Having access to whole genome sequencing gave us some sense of reassurance, it could have informed us about targeted treatments and gave us some insight into future risk.” Harri, mum of Eddie (pictured here). At six-years-old, Eddie was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). His treatment included whole genome sequencing, a single test that reads the entire genetic code of a tumour and identifies any cancer-causing changes. 🔎 On his seventh birthday, Eddie’s family received the call to say he was in remission and now at nine years old, he is doing well. 👏 Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was so important to Eddie's family that they helped fund a new study, published today, from the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and others. This research shows how the test has improved clinical care of children with cancer in England. Researchers found that cancer sequencing gave new insights that improved the immediate clinical care of 7% of children by providing information that is not possible to get from other tests. They also found that WGS gave additional details that informed future care in 29% of cases while providing all the benefits of current standard tests. In England, every child with cancer can access this test free of charge through the NHS Genomic Medicine Service, however, this is not yet widespread practice. This latest study shows the benefits of WGS and researchers support efforts to provide this cutting-edge test to all children with cancer. 🧬 Read the full story here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ejfBqQ-h 📸 Images of Eddie provided by his family #cancer #genomics #childhoodcancer
