Pioneering animal genetic improvement to sustainably nourish the world.

About us

Genus is a world-leading animal genetics company. At the forefront of innovation in gene-editing, advanced reproductive biology, and other breakthrough breeding technologies, Genus R&D advances an agricultural practice thousands of years old – animal breeding. Our goal is to ensure the global food system continues to nurture healthy, productive animals that yield affordable, high-quality proteins for a sustainable future. We believe a more sustainable food system starts with better breeding and genetics. Through ABS Global (bovine) and PIC (porcine), we supply high-quality breeding animals with desirable characteristics to farmers, enabling them to produce better quality meat and milk more efficiently to feed the world more sustainably. Our breeding animals’ desirable characteristics include feed efficiency, disease resistance, growth rate, protein and fat content, and fertility. ABS Global is the world-leading provider of bovine genetics, reproduction services, technologies, and udder care products. Marketing in more than 70 countries around the globe, ABS has been at the forefront of animal genetics and technology since its founding in 1941. In bovine genetics, ABS serves more than 40,000 customers globally, including some of the world’s leading beef and dairy producers. PIC, which stands for ‘Pig Improvement Company,’ was founded in 1962 in Oxfordshire, England. PIC strives to make their customers the most successful pig producers in the world and their “Never Stop Improving” philosophy means a continuous effort to listen carefully to customers and drive innovation to create ever-increasing value for pig and pork producers.

  • Ahead of the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting this month, PIC joined leaders from around the globe to discuss how our PRRS-Resistant Pig (PRP) can help address some of the world’s most significant challenges. Our Global Director of Product Sustainability at PIC Banks Baker recently met with CBS to discuss the benefits of our work in this space. The discussions at Davos follow publication of a 2023 Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) report, which identified improved genetics as the number one opportunity for sustainably increasing productivity and decreasing GHG emissions in the livestock sector.

PIC joined leaders ahead of the World Economic Forum to discuss the PRRS-Resistant Pig and the ways it offers a solution for a global animal health challenge. Journalist Olivia Kinghorst interviewed Global Director of Product Sustainability, Banks Baker, about PIC’s use of gene editing to breed healthier pigs, reduce the need for antibiotics and increase sustainability. • Meet Our 2025 North America Intern Cohort: Introducing Kate Davis   We’re excited to introduce Kate Davis, one of the newest members of the Labs Intern group, starting June 2nd under the direction of Todd Nevling. Kate is a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where she’s pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and Biology with a minor in Biotechnology. She plans to graduate in May 2026.   Growing up on a Boer goat farm south of Madison, Kate developed a passion for genetics and livestock improvement. Her experience with animal husbandry and genetics sparked a lifelong interest in applying science to enhance agricultural outcomes. While Kate has substantial hands-on experience with animals, she’s eager to gain lab-based expertise, which makes this internship an ideal opportunity for her to bridge the gap between her academic knowledge and real-world application.   Kate is no stranger to leadership, having served as President of the Junior Wisconsin Meat Goat Association and Secretary of the UW-Platteville Equestrian Team. She also owns a horse and you can find her competing at Hunter/Jumper shows around the Midwest! Her professional experiences, including a Field Research Intern role at Midwestern BioAg and customer-facing work at Tabby & Jack’s Pet Supplies, demonstrate her ability to adapt, learn quickly, and work effectively both independently and in teams.   In her words, this internship represents her top choice for gaining technical skills, networking with industry professionals, and exploring career pathways. Kate’s enthusiasm, work ethic, and unique combination of skills and experiences make her an exceptional addition to the team.   Welcome to the team, Kate!

  • Meet Our 2025 North America Intern Cohort: Introducing Haily Green We’re excited to introduce Haily Green as a part of our intern cohort! Haily will be joining us at the Wisconsin Barns, where she will work in Arrivals and Calf Care under the guidance of Dave Deans starting on May 19th.   Haily brings an impressive 15 years of experience with cattle, having been actively involved in cattle handling since she was a child. She began showing cattle at age six and helped start her family’s herd in 2018. Haily has worked across multiple operations, performing tasks such as sorting, moving, vaccinating, assisting with calving, and maintaining cattle lots and pens. Her broad animal-handling experience includes sheep and goats, showcasing her versatility and dedication. Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in animal science with minors in Microbiology and Biology at Iowa State University, Haily is set to graduate in May 2026. Her interest in Genus/ABS began at an Iowa State career fair, and she is eager to deepen her knowledge of reproductive processes, particularly semen handling and collection, through this internship.   Haily describes herself as a fast learner and hard worker with a keen eye for detail and a passion for the outdoors. She is enthusiastic about leveraging this opportunity to gain hands-on experience that aligns with her long-term goal of working in reproduction-focused roles.   Please join us in welcoming Haily to the team! We look forward to seeing the energy and expertise she’ll bring to the Wisconsin Barns.
