In the lead up to #worldmentalhealthday BBC News London Politics ran a special report on #mentalhealth support for Black communities, featuring the fantastic social enterprise SWIM: Support When It Matters. Dr Juliana Onwumere was on the programme to speak about this topic, talking with Samantha Simmonds, Florence Eshalomi and Bob Blackman about the importance of trying to reduce #stigma around mental health problems, making support accessible and ensuring communities are involved in #research to inform services. The GLAD Study turns 6 this month, so it’s a time to reflect on our aims and successes. We are recruiting people living in the UK to help us examine genetic and environmental factors that contribute to the development of depression and anxiety. We have recently broadened our study to include control participants who have never experienced mental health disorders, as well as specialised campaigns to increase participant diversity in our sample. In the UK, there is currently a healthcare gap between people from racialised minority backgrounds and their white peers. The reasons for this are complex, and solutions are multifaceted. One way the GLAD Study wants to ensure wider application of our research is through prioritising recruitment of underserved communities for mental health. This year, we launched two targeted campaigns to help improve recruitment of South Asian participants and Mixed Race participants into GLAD. These efforts, have meant that the rate of enrollment of participants from these groups is 3-7 times higher than before the campaign. Our work is not finished, and keep an eye out for more updates! Research is moving towards more co-productive methods, and at the GLAD Study we are proud to have incorporated participant voice across different milestones of the study. We have established a rolling panel of over 1000 participants willing to have their say on the GLAD Study’s plans, and many more get in touch with us on a daily basis. We take pride in responding to our participant enquiries and hosting feedback sessions.
