🎓 Introducing Our Newly Appointed Professors of 2024! 🎓 We asked our newest professors some questions to get to know them better. Meet Susan Jarvis, who was recently promoted to Professor of Animal Welfare Science and Education at the The Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems. ⭐𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸? I have a number of teaching and research roles. I am the Director of Teaching within the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems and recently became the Convener for Postgraduate Research (PGR). These roles involve leading the development of various educational resources in the area of sustainable food systems, as well as supporting our PhD students. Helping students to learn, grow and go on to do wonderful things in the world is a very rewarding part of my role. The main focus of my research is investigating the welfare of animals within our food systems, especially pigs and farmed salmon. Assessing the welfare of salmon within aquaculture has been particularly challenging due to the sheer number and aquatic environment, but has the potential to impact a large number of our food animals. ⭐𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂? Being the first in my family to go to University, it is a huge honour, and I'm very grateful for the support of my family and colleagues. ⭐𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲? Making time for studying and making friends is really important. So study well, but make sure to surround yourself with a supportive network - it's tough being away from home for the first time. ⭐𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀? It can be challenging to apply for professorship but I am very grateful that my colleagues encouraged me to apply. So, if you feel like it is time to apply, just go for it. Congratulations Susan! #Congratulations #Professor #AcademicExcellence #Inspiration #animalwelfare #foodsystems

Improving livestock health could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as suggested by a recent international research collaboration. 🌿🐄 Exciting new research reveals a win-win solution for climate change and food security! A new study shows how improving animal health could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming without compromising food production. Key points: - Common but overlooked health issues in livestock contribute to increased emissions - Improving animal health can reduce emissions while supporting farmers and food security - This approach is especially crucial for low- and middle-income countries As Dr. Frances Ryan from SEBI-Livestock at the University of Edinburgh notes, "Reducing emissions by improving animal health allows us to address environmental issues while protecting people who rely on livestock." This groundbreaking research opens up new possibilities for sustainable livestock management and climate finance in the sector. Read more about this important study: https://lnkd.in/ekjse3BD This study was led by Dr. Ilias Kyriazakis in collaboration with Claudia Arndt, Aurelie Aubry, Johannes Charlier, Olivia Florence Godber, Mogens Krogh, Pim Mostert, Karin Orsel, Mark W. Livestock feed scarcity poses a significant challenge in sub-Saharan Africa as the global population continues to rise. Our researchers collaborated with colleagues in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, and Kenya to analyse satellite images to identify regions experiencing livestock feed scarcity. These findings highlight the importance of accurate feed balance data and the need for policy interventions to optimise supply and demand.
