  • Providing excellent patient care is at the heart of all we do and this morning we were able to bring this to life for patients with a tour of Oldham Pathology Laboratory, showing them the progress we have made with the introduction of Digital Pathology. 🔬 🖥️ It’s not very often patients are able to see the process that goes on behind the scenes when having biopsies taken and the transformation projects that we are implementing to provide better patient care, helping to reduce health inequalities across the region. Today, we were able to bring the process to life and give three patients with lived experience the opportunity to view digital pathology in action. Beth Tumilty, Programme Lead for the Digital Pathology programme was joined by Dr. Luisa Motta, Clinical Lead for the Digital Pathology programme along with Ana Dela Luna, Specialist Biomedical Scientist who provided an insightful tour for the patients at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust The tour walked the patients through the Cellular Pathology Laboratory, showing them the traditional process and how glass slides are produced, before moving on to show them how the slides are scanned and viewed as an image on a computer screen for Digital Pathology. The patients were also shown how a consultant using the new technology can report a pathology case and the opportunities digital pathology brings for the patients of Greater Manchester. The morning was inspiring for both the patients and the team, as the patients were amazed at how intricate the process is and the team were able to hear the voice of the patient. A huge thank you to the team at Oldham Pathology Laboratory for giving up their time today and providing such a valuable patient experience.

  • This week it's National Eye Health Week, a week dedicated to promoting good eye health. There are many people across the NHS working in Ophthalmic and Vision Science, taking care of patients who may be experiencing issues with their sight, playing a vital role in their treatment and care. In this case study we hear from Joanne Fu and Awais Ahmad, Specialist Ophthalmic Science Practitioners in Glaucoma at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital on the role they play in helping patients with their vision. We have the latest diagnostic imaging scanning equipment at our #Salford Community Diagnostic Centre in partnership with InHealth Going for a scan can be a nervous and stressful time for many and we have designed our CT scan room with the patient experience at the forefront. When being scanned, patients can see our calming tiles on the ceiling. A CT scan patient said: “It was the first time I had a scan like this. I was so nervous and did not know what to expect. The staff were lovely and talked me through everything. The thought of going into a machine was very stressful. It was such a pleasant surprise to see pretty tiles above me that helped take my mind of things and allowed me to escape to a different place whilst the scan was being done.” Aoife Gregory #NHS
