In the latest instalment of Octo's 'Why Now for Investment Trusts?' programme, Philip Kent, CEO at Gravis and investment adviser to GCP Infrastructure Investments joined Nick Britton, Research Director at the The Association of Investment Companies (AIC). The conversation delves into the unique advantages and challenges of investing in infrastructure through an investment trust structure. Phil discussed the benefits of the Investment Trust model, particularly its ability to balance the liquidity demands of illiquid infrastructure assets with the need to provide daily liquidity for shareholders. He highlighted the critical role of transparency, disclosure, and independent boards in safeguarding shareholder interests. The discussion also touched on the broader investment landscape, including the UK government’s support for new asset classes, infrastructure’s key role in decarbonising various sectors, and its impact on the digital economy and social challenges. Phil expressed cautious optimism about new government policies, such as changes in planning legislation and the National Wealth Fund, and their potential to attract private sector capital. Phil outlined GCP Infrastructure Investments Ltd's three core objectives: delivering stable income, diversification, and capital preservation. He emphasised the importance of adapting to the evolving infrastructure sector, focusing on debt for payment stability, and maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability and ESG goals. Infrastructure investments offer a defensive, long-term income stream, making them a compelling option for today’s investors. The First Reading of Baroness Sharon Bowles’ Private Members' Bill (PMB) entitled “Listed Investment Companies (Classification etc) Bill [HL]”. It was short, sweet, formulaic and, on the face of it, not very exciting. But it marks the start of a crucial process to try to resolve the double counting issue UK listed investment companies have faced for too long.   Earlier in the week, William MacLeod, Managing Director at Gravis, recorded an interview with the Baroness, explaining the process which you can view here: https://lnkd.in/exwaMSGA #CostDisclosure #PrivateMembersBill

A couple of days ago, Baroness Sharon Bowles was kind enough to take some time to discuss her Private Members' Bill (PMB), entitled: Listed Investment Companies (Classification etc) Bill [HL]. The Bill has its First Reading on Thursday 5th September in the House of Lords, following which there could be an interminable wait whilst the legislative process grinds on. https://lnkd.in/gp3HM4rh The Bill is 14th on the list of PMBs and the 13 preceding Bills must have their Second Readings, before this one. The timetable for debate is limited: one Friday a month is ordinarily allocated to debating PMBs, and there is time to debate roughly 3 PMBs per session. That means Baroness Bowles' PMB is unlikely to have its second reading before the New Year. I asked if there were any way in which this process could be accelerated, and the good news is that there is! The Government could adopt the Bill, or 'steal it' and create a Statutory Instrument to push it through rapidly. The Bill is thought to be very unusual in nature, hence the extensive cast of contributors below, so now that the heavy lifting of drafting the Bill has been done, adoption by HM Treasury would be an easy, quick win. I will leave it there and wish Baroness Bowles success with this vital piece of corrective legislation. Consultants and contributors to drafting the Bill included: Baroness Ros Altmann, NIGEL FARR, Guy Rainbird, Richard Parfect, Ben Conway, David Appleton, Christian Pittard, James de Bunsen, CFA, Tom Harris, Katya Gorbatiouk, Tim West, Zoe Wilson, Tom Poynton, Minesh Shah, David Yovichic, Alan Brierley.

This week, the team is attending the Citywire North conference, where Matthew Norris, adviser to the VT Gravis UK Listed Property (PAIF) strategy, is presenting on 'Investing in next-generation property.' In today's dynamic market, it's clear that location is no longer the sole driver of value in property investing. The real growth lies in sectors shaped by mega trends like digitalisation and an ageing population. Next-generation REITs, focusing on high-demand assets such as healthcare facilities and logistics centres, are essential for enhancing diversification and securing reliable income in multi-asset portfolios. These opportunities not only offer long-term growth but also reflect the strategic advantage of active management in navigating the evolving landscape of real estate investments.
