  • On Friday the 18th of October, the Grimshaw Club and the Grimshaw Review of International Affairs team was invited to Cambridge University by the Cambridge Journal of Political Affairs to attend and contribute to their first ever public seminar! Our members were able to take a tour of some sights in Cambridge and various Cambridge colleges before listening to a seminar on a research article on Pseudo-Democratic Legitimation in Egypt by Avya Sharma. The Grimshaw Club President and Director of the Grimshaw Review Kaviesh Kinger was invited to contribute to Avya’s discussion and give a commentary on the research article as well as it’s implications in understanding Middle Eastern legal processes and reforms in relation to Western interests. The Grimshaw Review Executive Editor Joey Zhang also had the opportunity to present the two recent issues of the Grimshaw Review of International Affairs to the Cambridge team. Thank you so much to Cambridge Journal of Political Affairs! To find out more about the Grimshaw Review of International Affairs, check this link out: https://lnkd.in/g58AmN4h

  • From Lithuania to Estonia all the way to Mongolia, Taiwan and Norway: Grimshaw’s trips this year were all around the globe. Grimshaw’s trip to Mongolia was timely given the deepening influence of its neighbours in the region, and a recent watershed domestic election. The Grimshaw Club delegation led by Shane Gravel and Evan Jones visited multiple organisations, including the Central Bank of Mongolia, climate tech startup URECA, and the UK Ambassador to Mongolia, as well as nonprofit organisation GerHub and Global Shapers Ulaanbaatar Hub. We also visited the Mongol Art Gallery, giving an insight into Mongolia’s rising artists, and a local restaurant opened by an LSE alumni! Olivia Olson is a recent Masters in IR graduate from LSE this year. She is now moving to Bosnia and Herzegovina as a Fulbright grantee! Read about her experience below: "Traveling to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia with the Grimshaw delegation was an incredible and impactful experience. Throughout our two weeks in Mongolia, we met with a plethora of amazing individuals and organizations to explore key themes of democratic resilience and economic statecraft. We first met the team from the Elbegdorj Institute, a think tank focused on strengthening Mongolia’s democracy, with whom we partnered for this trip. We learned about Mongolia’s economy at financial institutions such as Khan Bank and Mongolia’s Central Bank, and about the cashmere industry during our visit to the Gobi Cashmere factory. We also visited a start-up, URECA, which uses AI to drive global change. We connected with LSE alumni and more young leaders in Mongolia’s Global Shapers group. In the political and diplomatic sphere, we met with a parliamentary candidate, attended a reception with the UK ambassador, and spoke with Mongolia’s former ambassador to the UK and China. We visited nonprofits such as GerHub, which taught us about the challenges faced by those living in Ulaanbaatar’s Ger district, and People in Need, who are also making a difference in the region. In the cultural realm, we visited the Mongol art gallery and saw a traditional Mongolian dance show at the national theatre. Not only was this an incredible opportunity to experience a new country, but going on a Grimshaw trip also allowed me to deepen my friendships with fellow Grimshaw members. I am so glad to walk away from this trip with not only a new connection to Mongolia but also several new friendships." Make sure to follow Grimshaw on our platforms and stay tuned for our Trips that we will be launching this incoming academic year!

I'm happy to report our LSE Grimshaw Club for International Relations Mongolia delegation was a great success! As Mongolia’s neighbors deepen and broaden influence in the region, amidst a watershed domestic election on June 28th, this trip was particularly timely and impactful. A huge thank you to trip co-leader Evan Jones and all of our participants and now great friends - Andrew Smith, Gauri A., Sophia Macomber, Rahini Takalkar, Ellena Fesquet, Jack August McEachern, Olivia Olson, Bartosz Dzwierzynski, Jamie Y., Alisha Menon, Ruben André Haug, and Jan Młynarczyk - for bringing a willingness to engage and adapt and support the overall smooth execution of the trip. Was a blast! I’d like to further thank Erdene Elbegdorj and his team at the Elbegdorj Institute – most notably, Purevjargal, Zolzaya, and Buuvei – for great partnership, advice, and additional support for portions of our trip and its itinerary. Their hospitality was unmatched and hopefully the start of an enduring friendship! Lastly, a huge shoutout to the organizations and individuals that accommodated our availability and made time for us: Route 22, a local restaurant opened by an LSE alum for so kindly feeding us and introducing us to many fellow Beavers. Khan Bank, Mongolia’s largest commercial bank, for their tour and presenting crucial insights into banking sector developments. GOBI Cashmere, one of Mongolia’s largest employers, for an inside look at production processes, sustainability, and global reach. The Central Bank of Mongolia, for taking time to offer a Q&A with trip participants – touching on subjects from sectoral and policy challenges to FDI and FX. URECA, a climate tech startup, for showing us their latest carbon credits and social impact work which leverage the use of AI and blockchain. UK Ambassador to Mongolia Fiona Blyth, for welcoming us into her home and fielding our many pressing, difficult questions into the current state of Mongolian and UK affairs, and her team for coordinating the logistics of our visit. GerHub, a prominent nonprofit in the region, for offering a first-hand look into life in the Ger districts and the challenges and opportunities present there. Global Shapers Ulaanbaatar Hub, a network of young leaders, for their warm welcome and sharing their stories and projects. Parliamentary Candidate Unurbayar Chadraabal, for taking time out of his busy schedule campaigning to offer advice and temper our political curiosity. Ambassador Sukhbaatar, former Mongolian Ambassador to the UK and China, for sharing his story and advice for hopeful diplomats. The Government Palace, for giving participants an exclusive tour and unique privilege to see the 9 banners. People in Need, an INGO, for offering an extensive overview of their work in the region and the difference that they are making. Mongol Art Gallery, for giving us an inside look at Mongolia’s rising artists and showcasing their beautiful collection.
