In loving memory of Alistair John Currie 🕊️
With deep sorrow, we mourn the passing of our colleague and friend, Alistair John Currie. Alistair’s sudden departure has left a profound void, touching everyone who knew him. He was more than a colleague; he was a cherished friend and an irreplaceable part of our HANetf family.
Alistair joined HANetf over six years ago, just as we were setting out on our journey before launching our first ETF. He was one of our very first team members, joining us at just 30 years old, full of promise and on the cusp of marriage. His journey with us was a testament to resilience and passion.
Even before he joined, Alistair had shared with us his battle with vasculitis—a condition that ultimately took him from us at the young age of 36.
But Alistair never let it define him. “It is what it is,” he’d say, facing each day head-on. We remember him dialling into conference calls from his hospital bed, not because he had to, but because he genuinely wanted to be part of it all. His passion for work was truly inspirational.
In Alistair’s world, every setback came with a silver lining. He approached each challenge like a puzzle, and no hurdle was too daunting. He understood his illness with the insight of a seasoned doctor, and he loved knowing how things worked, down to the smallest details.
He regularly diagnosed his interim medical issues before the doctors.
Alistair’s zest for life was boundless. He learned to code at his first job after school, streamlining an administrative process others deemed impossible to automate. Of course, Alistair’s first job was taken only after his university course was cut short due to illness. Life tried to hold back Alistair again and again, but Alistair remained steadfast.
Alistair learned to play the guitar on his own when his father said that Alistair would be given an electric guitar if he learned Samba Pa Ti by Carlos Santana, with his father thinking there was no way he would do it – but he did.
His kindness and generosity left an impression on everyone. Alistair had an innate ability to help you find solutions, rather than simply providing them. This was just one of the many ways he made us all feel supported, respected, and valued.
Beyond work, Alistair’s passions were clear. A connoisseur of fine food, he ordered a freezer full of Scottish meat each month—no compromise on quality. Every venison steak was an event in itself, and he saved up points to travel first class whenever he could. He was, unsurprisingly, an avid fan of the Concorde.
Alistair was a straight-up, hardworking gentleman who never fussed, always steady, always honest. His legacy remains an example of resilience and kindness, and he will be sorely missed by everyone at HANetf, his family, friends, and countless others whose lives he touched.
Forever in our hearts, Alistair will remain an example of resilience and kindness ❤️
