Following on from discussions at the recent National Housing Maintenance Forum (NHMF) 2025 conference, this Enquirer article highlights the growing challenges facing the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) and the implications on both new build and retrofit residential projects. An FOI has highlighted 90 major new build schemes are in a holding pattern awaiting Gateway 2 approval and works are stalled on over 600 Higher Risk Buildings (HRB). Last week, our Marketing Coordinator & Social Value Lead Darcie Studley headed to Sheffield to make a meaningful difference in line with our contract with Sheffield City Council. Her first stop, heading to SADACCA with the Built Environment for Good group, meeting with contractors of Sheffield to discuss purposeful differences we can contribute to make Sheffield a vibrant city of culture. Then, a trip to The Sheffield College for 2 careers talks with both Built Environment & Carpentry students, opening their eyes to the roles in the fire industry beyond the emergency services. A considered and positive formal response from RIBA to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report. We firmly back RIBA’s declaration that a programme of significant cultural change, as well as the outlined regulatory, structural and operational improvements is necessary to ‘move away from a culture of doing the minimum necessary, to one where professional expertise is valued, cherished and supported.’ There is much in RIBA’s response around the need for better education around fire safety, the collection and smart use of data, lessons and learnings from across the globe and the free exchange of information between connected agencies and organisations. Bringing greater rigour to the fire assessment regime is also long overdue. RIBA is clear that we need a broader use and enforcement of sprinklers across the built environment, welcoming the recent announcement around mandatory installation in all new care homes. ‘But we urge the government to mandate this more widely across all settings where vulnerable people may be living.
