The UK's leading science and innovation campus.
About us
Harwell is the UK’s leading science and innovation campus – a unique community of leading scientists, engineers and innovators working together to solve the critical problems facing our planet. Over 7,000 people work in more than 250 organisations at Harwell and these numbers will continue to grow. Our collective goal is to make Harwell the world’s largest and most important location for scientific research, technological development and commercialisation. We are finding solutions for the big challenges of the future including the impact of ageing and growing populations, climate change and sustainability, space exploration and satellite communications, energy technology and storage. We focus on accelerating science and technology breakthroughs to improve the human condition. Harwell is a crossroads where public, private, academic and commercial organisations meet and work together to address these global challenges. Start-ups, SMEs and multinationals choose to be located at Harwell where they have access to open access research facilities (the UK's National Laboratories) and where major investment opportunities exist. Over 30 university teams from across the world are on Campus at any one time. Cross sector collaboration combined with the cross fertilisation of talent, ideas and solutions are at the core of our open, collaborative environment. Harwell has been leading world-changing scientific breakthroughs for almost 80 years and is currently managed under a private/ public partnership focused on the development of the Campus and its unique ecosystem.

What does community mean to you? For us, it's easy... Community is so much more than just the physical location and interests of people. It’s about the connections we make, the collaborations we nurture, and the shared experiences that bring us together in the name of innovation and personal growth. As we reflect on the first eight months of 2024, it's impossible not to feel a sense of pride in the community we've built here. This year has been filled with events that have truly brought our campus to life. The Harwell Cup Challenge saw teams from across our campus, including Diamond Light Source, Element Six, STFC, and MDA Space, to name only a few, come together in friendly competition, with fun, sports day-themed events that broke down barriers and fostered collaboration. Our annual Harfest was another highlight, featuring incredible food, music, and the unmistakable buzz of connections being made. We’ve also offered moments of tranquillity and reflection with gong baths and yoga sessions, as well as opportunities for sector-specific networking through our themed breakfasts, bringing together minds from across industries to spark new ideas. As the summer draws to a close and routines begin to form again, it's a natural time to reflect. We’re excited for what the last four months of 2024 have in store and are already rolling up our sleeves to plan an even more impactful community programme for 2025. But now, we’d love to hear from you—what does community mean to you? Let us know in the comments below. #Community #Innovation #Collaboration #Science #Researchcommunity #Innovationhub

Advancing Science, preserving Nature. We're always "buzzing" with excitement when we hear about the groundbreaking research and innovation happening right here, on campus. Recently, Spatial Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS) - a technique developed originally at CLF - has been used to detect fake honey without opening the jar. This advanced technique showcases how cutting-edge science can support food integrity and consumer trust. Read more, here: https://lnkd.in/eQWF39c5 But that's not the only buzzworthy news on campus! We're thrilled to announce the arrival of our very first colony of native British Black Bees (Apis Mellifera Mellifera) to our Harwell Campus apiary. These remarkable bees, once thought to be extinct, are making a comeback thanks to the dedicated efforts of breeders in the Scottish Highlands. Our beekeeper, James, has been working closely with these breeders to ensure that our colony is pure and thriving. A perfect example of how cutting-edge science and nature conservation reflects the spirit of Harwell Campus. #BritishBlackBee #Biodiversity #Beekeeping #Sustainability #Innovation #Beekeeping #Science STFC Central Laser Facility James Barron

Between the hustle and bustle of Harwell Open Day, we had the privilege of chatting with Dr. Jennifer Moore from Moderna, who shared some incredible insights into the research and collaborations happening here at Harwell Campus, a place where innovation truly thrives. Harwell is all about growth and supporting our community of innovators. We’re constantly expanding our facilities to keep pushing the boundaries of science and technology. One of the most exciting developments is Moderna's new Manufacturing and Innovation Technology Centre (MITC), which will boost our capabilities in mRNA research and make Harwell a leader in biotech innovation. The MITC development will encompass a research, development and manufacturing facility, providing the UK public with access to cutting-edge mRNA vaccines for a wide range of respiratory diseases, pending regulatory assessment and licensure. Check out the full interview with Dr. Jennifer Moore below and be sure to follow us to stay up to date with the latest news on the MITC progress, here at Harwell. #Innovation #moderna #biotechnology #futureOfScience #lifescience #healthtech

Zeta is Complete! 🏗️ We are proud to announce that our latest development, Zeta, has reached an exciting milestone and is practically completed. Zeta is a high-profile, detached ‘mid-tech’ building offering space for state-of-the-art Lab and R&D facilities, and represents the latest achievement in our Harwell 600 development initiative. Zeta, is a design-led detached office and R&D building by Allies and Morrison, positioned as at the heart of a major development area here at Harwell. Surrounded by prominent buildings such as Zeus, Quad, and Tech Edge, Zeta offers the flexibility of three individual units with shared entrance and amenities, or as a single self-contained building. Offering up to 38,000 SF, and featuring a minimum 8.25m clear internal height and the capability to add first floors, Zeta was designed for Net Zero in operation with a Fabric First approach to achieve high energy performance. At Harwell Campus, we are investing £300 million to double the available lab space, adding over 600,000 sq. ft. in the next two years. This significant expansion will help meet the growing demand from companies eager to join our vibrant community. Already home to over 200 organisations and £3bn of national facilities, including the iconic Diamond Light Source synchrotron, Harwell Campus continues to be a hub of innovation. However, the increasing demand for lab space has highlighted a critical need. According to Knight Frank, companies across the Golden Triangle are seeking 2.2 million sq. ft. of lab space, but only 350,000 sq. ft. is currently available. That's why developments such as Harwell 600 are so important and we're excited to see the innovation that takes place within the these walls on campus. A huge thank you to Allies and Morrison, SDC, Bidwells, EHRW, Exterior Architecture Ltd, QODA Consulting, Faithful+Gould and Bureau Veritas Group for working on this project. A Day of Ingenuity, Teamwork, and Fun! 🎉 Our community came together on July 10th for the much-anticipated Annual Campus Challenge, competing for the coveted Yellow Cup. This year saw a record number of teams taking on both intellectual and physical challenges. Teams showcased their creativity and engineering skills with tasks like creating team banners and constructing weight-bearing bridges from straws. We were amazed by the impressive designs, with a special shout-out to The Zappers for their bridge holding an astounding 18.5 kg and Team Milford for their duck-themed creativity! The physical challenges tested the teams' coordination and communication through inflatable relay races and 5-minute volleyball matches. The large turnout of spectators, lured by free ice cream and a rock choir, added to the vibrant atmosphere. A huge congratulations to The Zappers from STFC, our winning team, who narrowly edged out La Cucaracha from MDA Space in a thrilling finish. Kudos to Element Six for involving their work experience students in the final, offering them a unique career perspective. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported the event. Your spirit truly embodies our amazing campus community. Looking forward to seeing you all back next year for the 2025 edition!
