Building a better world through entrepreneurship 🌎

About us

Hatch is a national charity that supports underrepresented entrepreneurs from across the UK to launch and grow businesses that are both sustainable and successful, and have a lasting impact on their communities. We’re committed to building a fairer society by helping develop entrepreneurs’ skills, knowledge, and confidence through our unique programmes designed by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs, and our sustainable, compassionate financial support offering. We’re not typical of the third sector. Although we’re a charity, we think and act like a business. Since 2014, we’ve supported more than 7,800 UK entrepreneurs to flourish, building a vibrant network of partners, funders, and investors who share our vision in the process. In 2022-23, more than 8 in 10 (84%) founders on our longer-term support programmes were female or from a marginalised gender, with more than 6 in 10 (64%) coming from a minority ethnic group. Nearly one in five (18%) founders on the same programmes told us they were disabled or neurodiverse. Our founders also told us the areas of knowledge and expertise they felt had seen the biggest improvements before and after completing a Hatch programme: - Accessing the funding they needed saw an increase of 97% - Measuring and communicating the impact of their business or organisation saw increases of 79% and 69% respectively. - Setting their organisation’s mission and vision saw an increase of 49% We estimate that since starting 10 years ago, businesses founded by our graduates employ more than 2,500 people in the UK and have raised more than £20m in investment. We work closely with our partners and funders, including UBS, J.P. Morgan, Yum!, Natwest and the Postcode Innovation Trust, bringing them closer to founders at every stage of their entrepreneurial journey. e: hello@hatchenterpise.org t: 020 7993 0074 Twitter: @HatchEnterprise FB: www.facebook.com/HatchEnterprise Instagram: hatchenterprise

The Hatch Enterprise team had the pleasure of attending the Funding Circle UK Fresher Fair at the beginning of the month, where we got the opportunity to talk to Funding Circle staff about the impact we’re making to democratise entrepreneurship in the UK through our programmatic and community-based support for underrepresented entrepreneurs across the country. It was encouraging to hear from so many at the company who have already provided mentoring and friendly dragon support to entrepreneurs in the Hatch community. Plus, this brilliant opportunity to chat face-to-face with the Funding Circle team allowed us to sign up more volunteers for our post-programme support opportunities as we go into our third year of partnership with Funding Circle. A massive thank you to Fransien Hermans and Reem Akl from Funding Circle for organising this opportunity for us to share our impact and to Felix JacksonRishi Aila, Deryl Thatcher (Walsh) MCIOF and Naomi Nathan from the Hatch team for representing our work at the fair! Our mission to build a better world through entrepreneurship takes a village, and we’re so grateful to the Funding Circle team for embodying our values through their volunteering to further our charitable mission and give invaluable guidance to underrepresented entrepreneurs. Thank you, Funding Circle UK! #Entrepreneurship #FundingCircle #SMEUK #BusinessGrowth #Mentoring #Volunteering

It’s #DyslexiaAwarenessWeek, and with stats estimating that between 20%-40% of entrepreneurs in the UK are dyslexic, there’s an intrinsic link between dyslexics and their success in entrepreneurship. To add context to this statistic, it’s estimated that 10% of the UK population are dyslexic. While acknowledging the challenges those with dyslexia face, such as reading, writing, spelling and more personal challenges like self-esteem, there’s no doubt that dyslexic people have unique capabilities in how they process and, therefore, output information. Dyslexic people are considered more creative and better problem solvers; but there is very little research identifying where this stems from. Dyslexics connect dots differently and have the ability to lead and motivate teams with compassion, partly through their own experience of workplaces and school environments that largely didn’t accommodate their needs. We can all learn from others with different thinking styles, and we’re proud to give significant space to these ideas. Last year, 18% of those on our cohort programmes identified as disabled and/or neurodivergent. Our message to dyslexic entrepreneurs is simple - feel proud of your achievements and how you’ve navigated personal experience to build a career that enables you to mobilise your potential! #Dyslexia #DyslexicThinking #DyslexiaAwareness

GO Phoebe Gibbons 👏 We're delighted to see Phoebe, a champion of business inclusivity and Hatch Enterprise Launchpad graduate, will represent Team GB at the Women's World Cup in December in Wheelchair Rugby. Phoebe is passionate about starting and maintaining meaningful conversations around disability inclusion. Through her business, 3DOM, she advocates for those from underrepresented groups with lived experience to be centred when embedding Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Phoebe wrote a fantastic guest blog for us late last year about building an inclusive business, which we highly recommend: https://lnkd.in/e3eqMKR9

“It’s life changing.” Meet Phoebe Gibbons ‼️ We caught up with Phoebe in between games at last weeks D2 competition. Phoebe has recently been selected for the Women’s Cup in Paris. We loved chatting to Phoebe, she is so humble. The squad will be attending the Women’s Cup in Paris from 5th to 7th December 2024. The Women’s cup is an event run by the French Wheelchair Rugby Federation and is currently the only international event for female players. This will be the fourth time the event has been run in Paris and the GB squad are returning to defend the title they won last year. The squad will be flying out on the 2nd December, followed by 2 days of training and classification, before the competition starts on the 5th December. The full squad is: Faye West 3.5 Leicester Tigers Millie Partridge 3.5 Norfolk Knights Hayley Cassin 2.5 Leicester Tigers Becky Simpson 2.5 West Coast WRC Helen Thompson 2.5 Stoke Mandeville Maulers Jodie Punshon 1.0 West Coast WRC Imogen Steele 1.0 London WRC Phoebe Gibbons 1.0 Stoke Mandeville Maulers “I’m so excited to have been selected I’m looking forward to welcoming this year’s new team members and reconnect with the girls from last year, it’s such a privilege to be selected for a second year to defend our title in Paris, it’s so important to be able to showcase female participation in a male dominated sport!” Helen Thompson” The squad will have training camp in Leicester at the end of October, under the guidance of Head Coach, Rob Tarr and Assistant Coach, Cara Lewis. Rob is hoping to repeat the success he had last year in guiding the women to the gold medal. #WomensCupParis #ThisGirlCan #TheseGirlsCan #WheelchairRugby #EmpowerWomen #WomenInSport #AllFemale #GenderEquality #WomenandGirls #SportsWomen #WomenEmpowerment #WomenSupportingWomen #GirlPower #WomenShould #disabilitysport #disabilityawareness #paraathlete #WheelchairSport #GirlsClub #GreatBritain #GB #WomensCup

There is no doubt that ‘femtech’ has been firmly in the news recently, and for good reason. At Hatch, we work with many underrepresented entrepreneurs who embed their personal experiences into the fabric of their ventures. From experience comes creative solutions, and when women’s health continues to be drastically underfunded, it’s devastating to hear that women are still facing barriers at every corner when it comes to securing funding. Just 1-2% of total health technology funding is invested in femtech products, which makes little sense when we’re talking about roughly 50% of the world’s population. Studies show that women are likely to spend 29% more per capita on healthcare needs than men and are 75% more likely to use digital tools for health-related information. The market for femtech products is rising and the valuation ranges from $60 billion to $1 trillion by 2027. The fact that the article below highlights how femtech founders continue to face barriers at all stages of their business journey comes as little surprise, this is something female founders are sadly very familiar with. From being told a product is ‘too niche because it was only needed by menopausal women’ to repeatedly being turned down for bank accounts or faced with insurance policies charging 150 times over the going rate due to excessive scrutiny of their business’s legitimacy, we’re angered by the lack of parity female founders face. There is some light, however, at the end of the tunnel. The UK has the second-largest share of femtech companies in the world, meaning we have a responsibility to set an example of trust and investment in women-led teams in the femtech sector. #FemTech #WomenInBusiness #UKbusiness #HealthTech

We are excited to receive a grant through eBay Foundation’s Global Gives grantmaking program. eBay's contribution will significantly fund our Community Programme, an initiative dedicated to offering ongoing peer coaching, workshops, pitching, and clinic opportunities to our growing community of entrepreneurs.  Our community support offerings, working hand in hand with our programmatic support, are vital to level the playing field for underrepresented founders. Access to networks continues to be one of the leading challenges faced by underrepresented entrepreneurs in the UK. So, with this new round of support from the eBay Foundation, we can continue to offer our high-impact development events for our graduate community. True equity means equal access to these opportunities. All peer coaching, workshop, and clinic events we run are free to participants, meaning grants like this are ever more critical. #eBayGlobalGives #Grantee #BusinessSupport #UnderrepresentedEntrepreneurs #CommunityBuilding #Networking #Pitching #Funding

We rarely get to share photos from a cohort perspective like this one taken by Incubator facilitator Jess Rad! Our cohorts build a tight network across the multi-month commitments our programmes require, and seeing so many smiling faces is truly heartwarming. 'Being a solopreneur can be extremely isolating at times, so to see this group come together to create such compassion and support for one another was a real privilege.'🥹 #FounderJourney #StartUpSupport #Entrepreneurship #Incubator

Winner: Positive Role Model for Gender The National Diversity Awards 2024 | Advancing Gender Equity in Orgs & Communities | Speaker | Charity Ambassador - Amaze | Neurodiversity advocate

Well that was extraordinary 😯 I’ve just finished facilitating my first programme for Hatch Enterprise UK And wow the experience brought me SO MUCH JOY! The founders in my cohort consistently blew my mind with their ✅ Courage ✅ Vulnerability ✅ Determination Across four months, we covered all the essentials of creating a business from vision and mission to sales and marketing, getting financially confident and learning how to systemise to optimise. Within our group sessions we co-created a brave and safe space that enabled deep: 💕 Connection 💥 Community  🤚 Belonging  🤗 Peer-to-peer support ⚡ Progression Being a solopreneur can be extremely isolating at times, so to see this group come together to create such compassion and support for one another was a real priviledge. I also had the pleasure of mentoring every founder, across challenges from sales and marketing to strategic planning, value proposition, pitch practice, the confidence gap, brand positioning, harnessing #ADHD and that unrelenting work/life juggle. And each time I left feeling so uplifted by our conversation. I feel so very grateful to have been part of this. If you’d like to be inspired, go follow these founders who are each having a positive impact on the world across the world of #DEI #sustainability #socialwork #neurodiversity #smallbusinesssupport #property #wellbeing #womensempowerment #inclusion #burnout and more: Gabrielle Austen-Browne FRSA (she/her) Kim Myers Assoc CIPD Lauren Neal Jenny Clark Lexi Thurston Rodica Murphy Anastasia P. Irene Nambi K. Rebecca Birch Vivian Okeze-Tirado Amanda Smith Andrea Corbett Namitha Muthukrishnan Grace Parsons Nikita Sanderson-Gillard 🙏 Special thanks to Mellissa Morgan and Shari Lawrence-Willis for making my life so easy and creating a truly remarkable and powerful programme that I know has really changed some lives and Sukhi Jutla for the cheerleading. 💥 I’m delighted to share that I will be facilitating Hatch’s first ever Ares Programme for disabled and neurodivergent entrepreneurs, starting in October with Tiany V. As an ADHDer and parent carer, and Ambassador for Amaze Sussex I really cannot wait to meet these founders ready to make waves. Onwards! ___ I love 121 mentoring for early stage founders and group facilitation work makes my heart sing!
