A company director has been given a 12-month community order after a worker lost his leg at a recycling centre. Daisy Ning Bai was told to complete 160 hours of unpaid work after 20-year-old Nathan Bland sustained life-changing injuries at the site in Halifax in 2019. Mr Bland had the lower part of his left leg instantly amputated and lost several toes from his right foot after his legs were crushed inside a waste baler. A recycling company has been fined £3m after a worker died and another was seriously injured while decommissioning a gas rig. The two men had been on a mobile elevating work platform when it was struck by a skirt pile. This led to the pair being thrown to the ground, about 12 metres below. Stephen Picken died at the scene. Mark Kumar suffered serious life-changing injuries. HSE prosecuted Veolia after identifying serious failings with the company’s planning, supervision and risk assessment. A Cheshire-based electrical transmission company has been fined £240,000 after a man was left paralysed from the chest down after a fall at work. Gavin Pugh, who was employed as a linesman, fell more than 30 feet while carrying out work to demolish electricity pylons in 2022. The then 35-year-old spent six months in hospital and has been left unable to work as a result of his extensive injuries. This is the moment a mechanical engineer fell from height while working at a HS2 site. He suffered a fractured skull, hip, jaw and pelvis after landing on the concrete floor 11 metres below. The man had fallen through a gap after stair treads had been removed from a stairway.
