Accessibility isn’t just a checkbox. It’s about making sure everyone can use the tools they need. But, in legacy systems, especially internal ones, it can often be neglected. Charlotte Cullen, a UX Designer at Hippo saw this firsthand when working on a project where an outdated system wasn’t meeting accessibility standards. The assumption? That internal users didn’t need accessibility considerations. The reality? A system that was creating barriers for many. Through research and data, she challenged these assumptions and secured buy-in for crucial accessibility improvements: •User insights disproved assumptions: 31% of respondents had a disability or impairment affecting daily life, while 41% made adjustments just to read the system properly. •Incremental improvements had a major impact: Updating the system to NHS design standards reduced accessibility issues by 80–90%. •Users noticed the difference: Feedback highlighted reduced eye strain, improved readability, and easier navigation. Accessibility isn’t just a legal requirement, it’s about making digital services work for real people. Not everyone has a smartphone. Not everyone can receive a mobile OTP, download an app, or scan a QR code. So why do so many digital services assume they can? When designing for the "default" user, it's easy to overlook those who don’t fit the mold. But in public services, these assumptions can create real barriers to access. In our latest blog, Pelin Demir, a UX Designer at Hippo explores how we challenged these assumptions while working on an NHS digital service. Here’s what she discovered: •Data showed that millions of people still rely on landlines for access to public services. •User research revealed significant challenges with mobile-first authentication. •By rethinking the approach, thousands of users who would have been locked out can now access the service. Inclusive design isn’t just best practice - it’s essential. Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/eH57aHuV #InclusiveDesign #UserResearch #Accessibility #DigitalTransformation #DesignThinking

No two healthcare organisations are the same. Each NHS trust has different challenges, priorities, and resources, so there’s no single solution that works for everyone. Sarah Corbridge, Business and Development Director for Health at Hippo, shares why listening is the most important thing any supplier can do. Too often, organisations come in with a pre-prepared pitch, rather than asking the right questions: •What are your biggest challenges? •Where are you now, and where do you want to be in the next few years? •How can we work with you to create something that truly fits? Understanding each organisation’s reality, how they work and the language they use, makes all the difference. At Hippo, we work alongside healthcare teams to design patient-centred digital services focused on outcomes. Confidence, courage, and community. Three things that help make tech more inclusive. For International Women’s Day, we brought these themes to life through talks, panels, and networking. One key message stood out: recognising your own value. As Liz Whitefield, Hippo’s Co-Founder and Executive Director, put it: "I was good at my job. I was excellent at it." Too often, women downplay their expertise. But owning your skills isn’t arrogance—it’s how you grow. And when more people step forward, speak up, and support each other, the whole industry benefits.
