  • 🥣 This is not your average catering job. Over 50% of prisons grow their own produce which is then used in their kitchens. Prisons up and down the country vary from having dairy farms to beehives and vegetable patches. This offers prisoners the chance to gain experience in horticulture right through to catering, equipping them with vital life and employability skills which help reduce reoffending. Meet Martin, after serving 20 years in the Royal Air Force he now works as the Catering Manager at HMP Grendon and Springhill. In his role, he teaches prisoners skills such as bulk catering, managing stock and good hygiene practices so they are ready for both employment and life upon release. Working as a prison caterer is a great opportunity to put your catering skills and qualifications into practice, while having an impact far beyond the kitchen. Martin says that “It’s important to try to teach basic cooking skills which many of them just don’t have. Watching them gain confidence is very rewarding. By giving them something they can use on the outside it all goes towards helping reduce the likelihood of their reoffending. I believe in the power of second chances and working with prisoners is so much more than just a job.” If you have a background in catering and a desire to support a prisoner’s journey to reintegrate into society, this extraordinary job might be for you. • It’s National Inclusion Week 🎉 Officer Dudden, a prison offender manager from HMP Aylesbury is encouraging others from the LGBT+ community to join the Prison Service and help keep the public safe. She said: “Diversity is vital because we are all different. I have found in the Prison Service that people are very accepting, and it helps that there are a lot of gay people working here, like me.” While admitting that the Prison Service can be a challenging environment, she also finds it rewarding. “Before joining the service, I was studying psychology and criminology and I applied for the officer role quite quickly after leaving university. I didn’t know an awful lot about what goes on inside a prison until I got there. It was daunting at first, but I soon found my feet and started to enjoy it. “The great thing about working in a prison is that you get to meet people from all walks of life and no two days are the same. But it’s not a job for everyone – you need bags of resilience to do this job and must be great at communicating with people.” Prison staff at HMP Aylesbury and across the country are doing an extraordinary job in challenging conditions. They play a crucial role in supporting the prison system to make prisons safer and protect the public. Tackling the root causes of crime helps reduce reoffending. Offenders who are sentenced to mental health treatment as part of their community sentence are less likely to reoffend than those serving a short prison sentence, a new study has found. Community Sentence Treatment Requirements (CSTRs) can be added to a community sentence for offenders with mental health, drug or alcohol issues. CSTRs can address the underlying causes of offending and help cut crime with more intensive supervision from probation staff and treatment that can last up to three years.
