Last month, for the first time in over a decade, our partner universities welcomed the first cohort of students for the trainee probation officer programme without previous higher education experience. We visited University of Portsmouth one of the academic providers for the trainee probation officer programme, to hear more about the educational side of the programme and the support offered to students. 💬 Thomas Reed, Head of Probation Professional Pathways says, “Working with our higher education institution partners, including the University of Portsmouth, we have designed and implemented a new pathway on the trainee probation officer program. Upon completion, this program will allow individuals to work as qualified Probation Officers, making a positive impact on offenders’ lives and in their communities.” Register your interest to stay up to date about our next trainee probation officer vacancies: https://lnkd.in/evmJ8996 Watch the full interview: https://lnkd.in/e6-4dnUy

  • 🌟 Do you know what a PIPE is? PIPE stands for Psychologically Informed Planned Environment. It’s a joint partnership between the NHS's Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) pathway and the Probation Service. What happens in PIPEs: 🧠 staff are supervised by a lead psychologist, providing a safe space to discuss and reflect 🗣️ ex-offenders are encouraged to participate in meetings, keywork sessions, and creative activities 📚 staff receive continuous training 🤝each ex-offender is paired with a key worker to ensure consistent communication with probation practitioners How are PIPEs different from standard Approved Premises? 📋 referrals at PIPEs are assessed by an Approved Premises manager (APM), psychologist, and a regime lead 🕒 each ex-offender will stay from 3-6 months, depending on engagement with the PIPE regime and support needs 👥 PIPEs have three additional roles: Lead psychologist, Assistant Psychologist, and Regime Lead 📖 all PIPE APs have weekly meetings to provide stable routines PIPEs incorporate psychological concepts to create a safe and supportive environment that address the complex needs of individuals who have often experienced trauma, mental health issues, and challenging life circumstances. • 🥣 This is not your average catering job. Over 50% of prisons grow their own produce which is then used in their kitchens. Prisons up and down the country vary from having dairy farms to beehives and vegetable patches. This offers prisoners the chance to gain experience in horticulture right through to catering, equipping them with vital life and employability skills which help reduce reoffending. Meet Martin, after serving 20 years in the Royal Air Force he now works as the Catering Manager at HMP Grendon and Springhill. In his role, he teaches prisoners skills such as bulk catering, managing stock and good hygiene practices so they are ready for both employment and life upon release. Working as a prison caterer is a great opportunity to put your catering skills and qualifications into practice, while having an impact far beyond the kitchen. Martin says that “It’s important to try to teach basic cooking skills which many of them just don’t have. Watching them gain confidence is very rewarding. By giving them something they can use on the outside it all goes towards helping reduce the likelihood of their reoffending. I believe in the power of second chances and working with prisoners is so much more than just a job.” If you have a background in catering and a desire to support a prisoner’s journey to reintegrate into society, this extraordinary job might be for you.
