Tom Brind Security Leader and Project Manager for Holtec International, one of our new employer partners, joined us for the prestigious and all-important role of pushing the button for the random selection process that decides our new Year 9 cohort for the academic year of 2025/26. We would like to thank Tom and Nicholas Fleming for taking the time to help us with this process and we very much look forward to working together. Tom will be giving our Doncaster UTC students an insight into the world of an international supplier of equipment and systems for the energy industry. Mission 2030 for SMR-300! Holtec’s SMR-300 will be deployed in the state of Michigan, aiming to be the first SMR to come online in the USA and one of the first anywhere in the world. The learning and experience of deployment in the USA will be applied to our SMR programme in the UK with lower delivery risk to support the UK’s net zero targets and energy demands. Our President of the Global Clean Energy Opportunities Richard Springman, Ph.D. spoke to the Yorkshire Post this weekend about our plans for a £1.5bn GVA SMR factory in South Yorkshire. South Yorkshire beat stiff competition from around the UK and came out top in our rigorous assessment process - but it was the pride and passion of local people and Mayor Oliver Coppard that sealed the deal. https://lnkd.in/eJ2_tkwP

Very positive announcements today from the government about opening up more sites for SMRs and making the planning process easier. Our director Gareth Thomas is quoted alongside Ed Miliband and South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard on the front of today's Yorkshire Post welcoming the news. SMRs are crucial if the UK is going to meet its climate change commitments and seize opportunities in advanced manufacturing, AI, hydrogen and SAF. Holtec was pleased to host Kate Josephs CB, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, Councilor Tom Hunt, Leader of Sheffield City Council, Jake Bower, Business Development Manager, Reach Studios, Michael Henderson Senior Director, Business Investment, PRA, and Cindy Hostetler | Senior Manager, International Investment Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development at our Holtec Manufacturing Division in East Pittsburgh. We had a great discussion on Holtec and our manufacturing capabilities, our plans for a South Yorkshire SMR factory, followed by a tour of our Pittsburg factory. Thank you for coming to see our operation in Sheffield's Sister City and safe travels back home.

At our Palisades project in Michigan, Holtec is at the centre of providing clean and reliable power so that the USA can take advantage of and lead the AI and data revolution while moving towards net zero. We want to help the UK do the same. ICYMI - excellent article in The Times this weekend covering our (world's first) re-start of a decommissioned nuclear power plant at Palisades in Michigan, the deployment of two of our SMR-300s on the site (coming online in the early 2030s - the first in the western world) and our SMR factory just outside Philadelphia which will be a blueprint for our planned £1.5bn South Yorkshire facility. ➡️ SMR deployment in the UK will be 2nd of a kind - bringing all the learning from our 1st SMRs in the USA. ➡️ Team Holtec includes South Korean firm Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co.,Ltd. who has built 24 nuclear plants - including at Barakah in the UAE which was delivered on time and on budget. ➡️ Our long-term partner Framatome is supplying our fuel in the USA and to the UK - boosting UK security and resilience. ➡️ We have a purpose built training centre for nuclear operators - including a full replica of a nuclear control room - with 150+ current trainees and a teaching team with more than 25 years of real world operational PWR experience each. ➡️ As the world demands more power for AI deployment and EV charging, SMRs will provide the reliable and low-carbon energy we need. https://lnkd.in/efRxWzdk

A good report out today from the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and Jeegar Kakkad/Tone Langengen which mentions Holtec's planned £1.5bn SMR factory investment in South Yorkshire as well as ways to speed up the delivery of SMRs in the UK - particularly around regulatory alignment which is crucial. If the UK is to become an AI powerhouse, it needs SMRs and large scale nuclear to be delivered and enabled at pace. https://lnkd.in/dCD2jM9v
