Milton is currently classified as a High End Category 4 hurricane, with wind speeds of 155 mph, and located approximately 520 miles southwest of Tampa Bay. The hurricane is forecast to make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane between Tampa Bay and Fort Myers late Wednesday night into very early Thursday morning, with estimated winds around 125 mph and potential for further strengthening. It is now one of the strongest hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin since Dorian in 2019.    There remains a degree of uncertainty surrounding Milton’s exact track and intensity, with the greatest consensus indicating landfall in the Tampa Bay/Sarasota region. By midday Wednesday, the storm is likely to encounter wind shear which could weaken it. As wind shear takes effect, Milton's wind field is projected to expand significantly and could make landfall as a Major Category 3 or 4 hurricane.    The Tampa/St. Petersburg region experienced 7-9 feet of storm surge during Helene’s landfall, but with Milton, surge heights could reach 10-15 feet. Areas around Tampa Bay are particularly vulnerable to this surge due to their low elevation and proximity to the coast. If Hurricane Milton makes landfall as forecast, it will be the strongest hurricane to hit the Tampa Bay area since the 1921 Tampa Bay Hurricane, which caused devastating storm surge and widespread damage. Milton’s potential to bring higher surges, combined with a much denser population and modern infrastructure, could lead to catastrophic impacts. Tropical Storm Milton has been upgraded to a Hurricane. The storm is located in the western Gulf and forecast to bring potentially significant impacts to the Florida Peninsula later this week.   "There is some uncertainty in the current forecast,” says Anna Neely, Head of Catastrophe R&D at Howden Re. “The range of outcomes will generally follow a slower approach and weaker landfall or a faster approach and stronger landfall. Regardless of the wind strength, Hurricane Milton is expected to build up a large storm surge that would carry through until landfall."   "As Milton is still in the early stages of development, initial forecasts will be subject to change,” added Justin Roth, ARM, CEEM, Associate Director, Catastrophe Analytics R&D, Howden Re. “However, there is strong model consensus predicting rapid intensification over the next 48-60 hours. Milton is currently in a favor environment for rapid intensification as it will move over the ‘Gulf Loop’ – like Helene and other major storms such as Ian, Michael, and Wilma. The exact track of the storm still carries uncertainty regarding both timing and landfall location. Possible landfall locations range from Cedar Key (north of Tampa) to Fort Myers, with the majority of models forecasting a direct hit near the Tampa Bay area.   "Between the 1921 storm and today, Tampa Bay has experienced many near misses. While hurricanes have frequently approached Florida's west coast, the curvature of the coastline and steering winds have often diverted storms away from a direct hit on the Tampa-St. Petersburg area. Recent storms including Hurricane Irma (2017) and Hurricane Elsa (2021) skirted the area, producing damaging winds, localized flooding, and some storm surge, but neither made a direct hit on the bay itself.   "Tropical Storm Milton is projected to become a major hurricane and has the potential to make landfall near or around the Tampa Bay area. If Milton tracks directly into Tampa Bay, it could produce storm surges far exceeding those seen in 1921. Milton could produce storm surges of up to 15 feet.   "The combination of Tampa’s geographical vulnerability and its long "hurricane drought" has created significant concern about what a major landfall might mean for the region. As we saw with Helene (2024), which has caused severe flooding and power outages; a direct hit from a Category 3 or 4 like Milton could be catastrophic."
