How the Autumn Budget 2024 Impacts Employers💷 Today’s Autumn Budget brings significant updates for UK employers. Key takeaways: ✅ Minimum & Living Wage Increase: The National Living Wage for those 21+ will rise 6.7% to £12.21, with 18-20-year-olds seeing a 16.3% increase to £10/hour. ✅ Employer National Insurance: Employers’ NI will increase by 1.2% to 15% from April 2025, with the NI threshold lowering to £5,000. ✅ End of Income Tax Threshold Freeze: From 2028, income tax thresholds will adjust with inflation. ✅ Support for Small Businesses: Employment Allowance doubles to £10,000, relieving 865,000 small businesses from NI costs. ✅ Additional Measures: Fuel duty freeze, expanded carer’s allowance, and 40% business rate relief for retail and hospitality. On Monday, 21 October, two new public consultations were launched: 🔸 Making Work Pay: Strengthening Statutory Sick Pay 🔸 Making Work Pay: Collective Redundancy & Fire and Rehire Both are now open until 2 December 2024, giving you, as an employer, the opportunity to contribute your views! The Employment Rights Bill Timeline 📆 Here are some key dates to keep in mind: 📅 21 October 2024: Second reading of the Bill – The parliamentary process begins with a debate on its general principles. 📅 Autumn 2024: Introduction of the Equality (Race and Disability) Bill to strengthen discrimination protections. 📅 2025: Consultations will occur throughout the year to refine reforms with input from businesses, unions, and experts. 📅 April 2025 (likely): Implementation of the genuine living wage requirement. 📅 2026 onwards: Most reforms will take effect, including significant changes to dismissal, wages, and worker protections. 📅 No sooner than Autumn 2026: Unfair dismissal reforms, including a statutory probation period. While these changes may seem significant, there is plenty of time for businesses to assess their current practices, plan accordingly, and put the right strategies in place.
