Forget Big Ben, Hull has its own unique timekeeping landmark 🤩 This is Hull's Time Ball, a gold leaf-wrapped sphere over a metre in diameter, that was once used by sailors leaving Hull's docks to set their chronometers in preparation for their journeys out at sea. It rose and fell for the first time in over 100 years on the 29th of June 2023, after a comprehensive repair and renovation. The clock tower was cleaned and restored, and a new internal mechanism was installed too, adding a modern system to keep it running. And despite one small hiccup a few weeks after its grand reopening, it's still in operation today! If the weather is good, cast your eyes up at 12:57pm every day and you'll spot it rising, before dropping at 1pm sharp. Hull’s Time Ball is the highest of its kind in the UK, and was one of the last to be built, between 1915 and 1916. It is just one of a small number still working in the country and one of the last remaining examples of this type of timekeeping in Britain, and an important part of Hull's maritime history.
