3 tips for fostering collaboration in teams with significant age differences: 1. Recognise and value everyone’s unique strengths: Each team member brings valuable skills—whether it's technological expertise or industry experience. Avoid making assumptions about where these strengths lie. For example, don't presume older colleagues are less comfortable with technology or that younger ones lack experience. Instead, treat each person as an individual with their own strengths and preferences, ensuring no one feels objectified or belittled. 2. Facilitate knowledge sharing. Create opportunities for team members to share their insights and learn from one another. Encouraging ongoing growth and exchange of expertise keeps the entire team engaged and fosters a collaborative learning environment where every contribution is appreciated. 3. Ensure all voices are heard and respected. Involve everyone in decision-making, regardless of age, and avoid letting age-based power dynamics influence how input is considered. Valuing each voice equally helps to create a more inclusive, respectful, and effective team environment. How to promote cultural diversity and inclusion as a manager without burdening teammates from marginalised communities: This is a shared responsibility that should never disproportionately fall on team members from marginalised communities. Pressuring such individuals to lead inclusion efforts is tokenising and exploitative. As a manager, it’s important to foster an inclusive environment where everyone takes ownership of this work. Here are a few tips to avoid placing undue expectations on your teammates: 1. Educate yourself Take the initiative to learn about cultures and experiences different from your own. By proactively seeking knowledge, you avoid relying on team members from marginalised communities to provide educational labour. 2. Promote a culture of continuous learning Once you've set the tone, encourage ongoing learning within your team. Share resources like books, podcasts, documentaries, and information about cultural events to broaden their understanding of diverse perspectives. By fostering a collective learning approach, you avoid placing the burden of education on team members from marginalised communities. 3. Avoid defaulting to team members from underrepresented backgrounds to contribute to such efforts. Instead, provide opportunities and resources for any team member—regardless of background—to participate. This ensures that the work is shared across the team, rather than unfairly resting on marginalised individuals. 4. Engage external support when needed. While it’s important to center lived experiences, this can be done respectfully by engaging external consultants and trainers. This allows for authentic representation and input without overburdening your team members from marginalised communities.
