We are in the thick of our summer project, supporting the Million Mile Clean. This is led by Surfers Against Sewage, bringing volunteers together to clean miles of blue, green or city space each year. Surfers Against Sewage are one of the charities we are supporting this year. On 14th of August we ran a beach clean in Morecambe, where 10 of us collectively walked 40km and picked up 54kg of litter. The team picked up a lot of small plastic litter, as well as bottles, glass and even nappies. The sun shone, and there were plenty of smiles! We want to thank everyone involved: HW Facilities, CBRE and key account clients. Not only was it a great day, but thanks to their efforts, 54kg of litter has been saved from polluting our beautiful coast line. Our next Million Mile Clean event will take place at Dunorlan Park, Tunbridge Wells, on 25 September. We’re excited to announce our Land's End to John O'Groats Charity Challenge for Dorothy House Hospice Care. This September, the HW team are taking part in a group duathlon challenge: an 847-mile virtual journey from Land's End to John O'Groats in just 12 hours! We have partnered with K24 Fitness Westbury, which is situated across from our Head Office, we will have the use of their gym facilities and our participants will be riding bikes and running (or walking!) on treadmills within the facility. In addition, an on-road cycling group will be setting off in the morning to rack up more miles! The challenge will be held from 6am-6pm on 19th September 2024. All levels of fitness are welcome, and every single contribution will be appreciated! Do you want to get involved but can’t get to the gym? Any walk or cycle can be counted, whether it's an extra-long dog walk or an afternoon bike ride in the park - no matter what, you can be involved. All you have to do is log your distance within the 12 hour period and send it to us, your submission will be entered and added to the mile count. So please get cycling, running, or walking and get ready for our Charity Challenge. We asked our team to share their experiences with Dorothy House Hospice Care. This is what Sophie, from our head office, had to say: "I’ve had two experiences with Dorothy House, one in Salisbury and another in Winsley. The first was when my uncle, who had cancer, was transferred to Dorothy House in Salisbury for his final two weeks. The staff were incredibly kind, compassionate, and communicative. They accommodated our large Irish family, who flew over! allowing many of us to visit and even stay overnight. The whole experience was truly amazing, and I can’t fault a single thing. The second experience was during a job interview at Dorothy House in Winsley (near Bradford on Avon). Having previously worked for the NHS, I applied for a position there for career development. The interview process was seamless, and I was made to feel very welcome. Unfortunately, I had to withdraw from the process due to another job opportunity, but even then, the team was extremely understanding and expressed genuine regret that I couldn’t join them." #CancerSupport #CharityOfTheYear #Community #DorothyHouse #Winsley #Salisbury #HospiceCare

It's time for another Million Mile Beach Clean! This time we're heading North to Morecambe Beach to help clear up forever plastics from our beautiful beaches. We've enjoyed our participation in the 2024 #PlasticFreeJuly campaign. Everyone in the office has thought about how they can reduce their plastic usage, we cleaned the beach at Weston Super Mare, and we asked Bowak Ltd one of our biggest suppliers, how they are reducing their use of plastic across the industry. On Monday 22nd of July we joined forces with CBRE and key account clients to participate in the Million Mile Clean, an initiative led by one of the charities we are supporting this year, Surfers Against Sewage. The Million Mile Clean is bringing volunteers together at events such as this to each clean miles of blue, green or city space each year. We started a series of 3 events with a beach clean in Weston-Super-Mare where 20 of us spent a few hours gathering debris that did not belong on the beach. Working as a team, and in a great atmosphere, we collectively walked 140km and picked up 78kg of litter. We want to thank everyone involved, not only was it a great day of joining forces and working collaboratively, but thanks to your efforts, 78kg of litter has been saved from polluting our beautiful coast line. Thanks also to Bowak Ltd who donated the litter pickers we used on the day. Did you see the recent news about a 50 (!) year old plastic food wrapper washing up on a beach? There's a reason these things are called "forever plastics" and it's not because they have a really long useful life, unfortunately. HW are passionate about making a positive difference.
