About us

Hydracrat is one of Scotland’s premier borehole drilling contractors, specialising in: 1. Ground investigation 2. Ground water investigation & water wells 3. Geothermal Hydracrat operate the unique and industry renowned HYCATs, which are all designed, assembled and maintained in-house. Our fleet also includes tracked support vehicles, recovery vehicles and pumps which are available to assist drilling operations where required, especially in the most arduous terrain. All of our operations are aimed at reducing environmental damage. Furthermore, we have our own in-house expertise to plan, execute, and report on geotechnical investigations using experienced staff. Hydracrat was founded in February 1960 to establish itself as a leading ground investigation contractor, initially making our mark by performing a key role in proving Scotland’s largest and most successful open cast coal sites, many of which were inaccessible using standard tracked drilling rigs due to extremely soft ground conditions. We are now helping to decarbonise heat in Scotland, by installing the borehole ground array to facilitate Ground Source Heat Pumps nationwide.

    Working with expert consultants on behalf of a blue-chip company, we recently carried out a comprehensive investigation into the possibility of harnessing geothermal heat as part of a future Ground Source Heat Pump system on a large commercial site. Our works package included the drilling of a deep borehole, before conducting a Thermal Response Test and assessing the groundwater potential for an open-loop scheme. Findings will now be considered, as the project team look ahead to the next phase of the development. #borehole #geothermal #drilling

    A busy period for us recently with a number of projects ongoing, including at this soft fruit farm in Scotland where additional water is required to fulfil modern irrigation demands... Exploratory drilling was carried out to prove (or disprove) the existence of a fresh groundwater source. Following promising findings, attention now turns to the specification for the production well. #borehole #irrigation #water

    Water security is becoming increasingly important for developers, none more so than on this project in north-east Scotland where the long-term operation of the site would be aided by access to sufficient reserves of groundwater. We were delighted to help through the drilling of multiple large-diameter water wells. The chosen specification was selected to maximise the groundwater yield at promising locations which were previously identified during preliminary drilling. Our drill crew were assisted by our track-mounted compressor and excavator, which was mobilised to help lift and manipulate the heavy equipment needed for drilling large diameter wells. A period of abstraction testing was subsequently conducted to gain a greater understanding of the groundwater flow rate which could be sustained from each well. #waterwell #borehole

    In recent months we have been putting our new high-pressure and high-flow air compressor to good use... On this particular project we were engaged to drill multiple large diameter water wells. There was a reasonable distance between each well location, across undulating ground without easy vehicular access. Therefore, moving a skid-mounted or wheel-based compressor (and safely) would be much more challenging. Our solution to this common issue was to mount the compressor onto a set of tracks, which can be operated remotely. Here it can even be seen towing a trailer loaded with equipment such large diameter rockbits, hammers, heavy duty drill rods and drill collars - all things which are essential for drilling large diameter wells. So not only does this new compressor allow us to drill boreholes much more quickly and safely, much like our Hycat rigs it can also get to locations that others simply can't without ground preparation. #drilling #waterwells #largediameter #compressor
