This has been an exciting and inspirational week for ICMIF CEO, Liz Green and Chief Membership Officer, Ben Telfer who have been meeting members in Japan. These companies are doing incredible work in disaster resilience and prevention — vital efforts in a country that frequently faces natural disasters. This visit is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen connections with these members and the Secretariat AOA of the ICMIF Asia and Oceania Assocition, to share insights, and learn from these members’ incredible experiences in disaster risk reduction which we can then share with other members around the world, creating more resilient communities. Tuesday provided an opportunity to meet with leaders of Kyoei Fire & Marine Insurance, a prominent non-life insurer, and then spend the afternoon with Kokumin Kyosai Coop, one of Japan’s leading cooperative insurers, where they met senior leaders including Shuichi Uchikoshi, President and ICMIF Board Member and Tadao Takahashi, Senior Managing Director plus a great session connecting with Young Leaders at the organisation. Zenkyoren, founded in 1951 as a cooperative insurance organization to serve Japan’s farming community, gave the two visitors a very warm welcome on Wednesday including the chance to try out Zenkyoren’s VR technology which helps to prevent farming accidents and a new app which has an alert for natural disasters, all part of their prevention/DRR activities. The afternoon was spent at the Japan Cooperative Insurance Association Incorporated (JCIA) Seminar – an annual seminar which aims to raise awareness of cooperatives and mutual insurance business. JCIA is a key organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting the cooperative insurance sector in Japan. The seminar is widely attended by JCIA member organisations, related organisations, members, with a total of 370 attendees at this week’s event (some in-person and some online). This year, JCIA invited Mr Masahiro Higa of the Japan Cooperative Alliance (JCA); and Liz Green with Ben Telfer to give presentations on "The significance of IYC2025" and "ICMIF's global view of a modern cooperative Insurer". Attendees deepened their understanding of IYC2025 and ICMIF's activities and of ICMIF members in other countries. The seminar was followed by networking, which was a great success. More details on the rest of the visit will be shared soon, including a study visit to the Sendai region to learn about the effects of the Great Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011 and the ongoing restoration. #ConnectingMutualsGlobally #DRR #Prevention #OnlyAtICMIF #CollaboratingWithPurpose #Insurance #Mutuals #Cooperatives #MutualInsurance #PurposeDriven HIROKO KOWADA
