  • My journey into leadership began at the tender age of 10. You see, it was from this age that I had this incredible yearning to become a police officer. Despite the fact that, at every opportunity, my dad would tell me and my 6 siblings that we were to become doctors, dentists and lawyers (anyone with Asian parents back in the 1970s will get this). My dream started from me sitting on a brick walk at the end of the street. I had simple childhood... We weren't rich so we had to make up our own amusement. Mine was to watch hoards of football fans every other weekend going to the football stadium 3 streets down. But I was watching the big, tall police officers, in their tall helmets and smart tunics. They were the epitomy of safety and security. They were responsible for looking after our communities. That was my first understanding of what leadership meant. Most of siblings followed my dad's idealogy. My eldest brother took it way too far and became a doctor and a solicitor, running practices in both. Meanwhile, I applied to every single police force in the UK. 26 rejections later, I finally got my chance to join Derbyshire Constabulary. My journey through the police service taught me so very many lessons in leadership, from resilience, through to making life and death decisions, through to large scale transformations and everything in between. It took me decades to discover that my new, emerging passion was, in fact, leadership. I love the challenges of leadership. I love working with people. Over time, I've come to realise the power of human centric leadership. It's a game changer! 48 years on from the boy in this picture, I'm now a man with just as much excitement and passion. I have new 'walls' to sit on. I watch how my clients operate and see my role as supporting them to bring about changes in ways that bring their people along with them. To transform cultures that are high performing because everyone feels engaged. I'm still excited about the future. That's my story. I would love to hear yours. ******************** Hi, I'm Kul. I post about emotional intelligence in our leadership practices and how we can create human centric cultures that perform. I work with a wide variety of industries and sectors. • I can't believe that we have got to 100 episodes of the Human Centred Leadership podcast. What better way to celebrate this episode than to invite our first-ever guest back for a fascinating and enlightening conversation about inclusive cultures? I am so grateful to my friend, Keith Fraser, for showing up and sharing his thoughts. We take a trip down memory lane as we both served as Superintendents in different police forces but we have also been left long enough to experience leadership outside of the service. I remember asking Keith to be on the first episode and his response was in his usual humble style (although accompanied by his trademark smile). He told me that he would do it but he was petrified. The truth is, he is a natural and has deep wisdom to share. Thanks to awesome Producer, Pete Allen, for being such a supportive superstar throughout the journey. It took much persuading for me to finally launch my own podcast as I just didn't believe people would get value from it. Since that first episode, we have been downloaded 21,000 times in 140 countries. This year is huge for the brand as the podcast transforms into the first-ever Human-Centred Leadership conference in May and, of course, Keith is one of the speakers. We will also be recording our first two podcasts from the stage as part of the conference. We have a great line-up of speakers and panellists coming together as we explore the future of workplace cultures in a post-pandemic world. Early bird tickets are available until the end of March. I hope to see you there. ****************************************************** A polite request: Please leave a comment or two on the podcast and share so that we can reach a wider audience. ******************************************************* Link to the podcast episode: https://lnkd.in/gt7A6qhn Find out more about the Human Centred Leadership Conference: https://lnkd.in/eHA6CmK8 ******************************************************* #podcast #leadership #humancentredleadership #emotionalintelligence #EQ

  • Have you ever heard of 'organisational procrastination'? Neither had I until I decided it was a 'thing' this morning. Recently, I have been doing quite a bit of thinking on organisational culture change. I'm fascinated and frustrated in equal measure. There are so many examples of 'culture problems' that have been highlighted (mainly in the public sector only because it is subject to more reviews than any other sector but the challenge is real for many.) When you compare these reviews to those carried out in previous decades, there are few real new findings in truth. Often where there are failings recognised in an organisation, inevitably culture is mentioned. So why do we keep repeating the mistakes of the past that cost us our reputations, have a financial impact, affect our overall performance or profit or lead to talent leakage or recruitment paralysis? One of the answers lies in the over complication of the task. This in turn leads to overwhelm for organisations and on to 'organisational procrastination'. Just like people, organisations will experience paralysis from overwhelm. They will convince themselves, however, that they are making progress by coming up with often re-hashed strategies of the past. We raise the volume on EDI again. Perhaps we come up with yet another wellbeing strategy. All of these serve to either act as distractions from the root issue or are little more than sticking plasters for the symptoms of cultural angst. Consequently, the problems are repeated and highlighted in another report just a few years down the line. Cultural transformation is admittedly not easy but is definitely achievable through a structured process that puts the people at the heart of the strategy. Have you ever experienced 'organisational procrastination'? ***************************************************** We are on a mission to understand what human centric cultures and workplaces could and should look like. If you want to be a part of the conversation, please join us at the landmark Human Centred Leadership conference in Birmingham on 22 May. ******************************************************* #HumanCentredLeadership #emotionalintelligence #EQ #culturetransformation

  • All set for Module 5 of our Inspire leadership development programme for Psychologists. Today, our focus is on meetings. I've been in thousands of meetings in my leadership career but I can never recall ever having been on a course teaching me anything about meetings. Strange to think when we spend so much of our time in meetings, don't you think? I once did a piece of work measuring the cost of each meeting. Then I asked the question if we were getting a return on our investment. You could have heard a pin drop. I never did get an answer. The truth is that meetings are so much more than a group of people getting together to chew the cud. They are opportunities to create, disseminate, analyse and grow. Some of my top must have issues in meetings include: 👉 Have meaningful agendas. Standing agenda items should be scrapped if they just take up time. 👉 Ensure that everyone has the opportunity to contribute. Don't forget the introverts in the room. Facilitation is key. 👉 Never underestimate the power of the pre-meets where you can either win support for your idea or understand concerns of others. It will shorten the debate at the actual meeting. 👉 Recognise effort and achievements. We often forget the impact that 'public' acknowledgement of good work can have on a person. I'm looking forward to a great day with our vibrant cohort of psychologists today. What other tips do you have for meetings? #leadership #communication #emotionalintelligence #relationshipbuilding #HumanCentredLeadership #meetings
