How do we give wings to innovation and transform the textile and
fashion industry?
Around the globe governments are investing in sustainability R&D, connecting initiatives to finance.
The UK fashion and textile industry brings £62 billion to the UK GDP, providing 1.3 million jobs and 23 billion GBP in tax revenues.
So how do we re-invest and regenerate “this sleeping giant of an
industry?” - words by Victoria Thompson. Less we forget, old banking systems Rothschilds, Barings Bank, Lehman brothers were all born of textile (cotton and wool) trade. There is money to be made.
Meaningful change requires government funding to rebuild infrastructure, invest in R&D and scale innovations. Whilst the degrowth argument makes scaling a dirty word, we are awake to the necessity to find alternative models to the current throwaway, planet-destroying textile landscape.
At Plexar, this month in London, a showcase of leading UK textile R&D
funded projects and a room full of changemakers, academia and financiers gathered by invitation.
We were lucky to be featured via our hemp farm 2 fibre pilot project to re-establish a localised hemp textile chain in the UK and return value to waste through recycling post-consumer cashmere, in partnership with iinouiio: Recycled Textiles. Morpho's hemp fibres are grown in Leicestershire - requiring zero artificial irrigation and no pesticides or herbicides in cultivation. Blending this untreated hemp with post-consumer cashmere waste, the fibre takes on the colour of the waste feed, omitting the need for dyeing.
It's been a privilege to be showcased along so many other change-makers:
- Keracol Limited - exploring the commercial feasibility through an innovative
dyeing process using colours extracted from residual fruit skins the equipment developed through this R&D is integral to bringing novel naturally dyed products to the general market.
- Multi award winning Superlove Merino repurposing cutting room waste into beautiful knits.
- LOOPHOUSE LIMITED, creating custom wall and floor coverings utilising recycled wool in partnership with iinouiio: Recycled Textiles.
- Anna Glover, a surface design and wall covering studio developing sustainable alternatives to the polyester-based industry standard for materials, presented a new project in collaboration with CQ Studio and Nettle Circle AG.
With special thanks to Plexal, Professor Jane Harris and Centre for Sustainable Fashion's forward-thinking, connecting investment and innovation to bring together pioneers & thought leaders in our industry.
In celebration of joining forces and the power of partnerships.
