There seems to be recently a great deal of misunderstanding (based upon recent conversations I've had within the industry with participants, clients as well as a few firms making #managedaccount marketing claims 🙄) of #DIRECTINDEXING vs. #CUSTOMIZEDINDEXING vs. #CUSTOMIZEDSMAs - they’re NOT the same..yet part of MAS 🚅 A #DIRECTINDEX is where an investor owns a series of specific equities (or other instruments such as bonds etc.) or their fractional shares from a #benchmarkindex using accounting, overlay, reporting and tax management etc. to manage and trade over a set time frame and basis i.e., at the moment, multiple times daily, weekly etc.) attempting to replicate a return within a certain level of risk/cost etc. Firms that provide this inc. Morgan Stanley / Parametric, Vestmark, Charles Schwab, PGIM, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, BlackRock, J.P. Morgan, Envestnet, Inc, Fidelity Investments, Wealthfront, Orion etc. 🛃🧾 #CUSTOMIZEDSMAs are accounts where an investor has with their advisor's guidance the need to "customize" a specified strategy i.e., Large Cap Growth "momentum" strategy from an investment manager while replacing specific equity positions (being aware of wash sales etc.) and or sectors due to the need to alleviate for regulatory, tax management, specific risk parameters, and or to meet a need to not invest within defined companies etc. Firms that provide this inc. PGIM, Morgan Stanley / Eaton Vance / Parametric, BlackRock, Nuveen, a TIAA company, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Smartleaf, Franklin Templeton and most investment managers that provide #DualContractSMAs, #SingleContractSMAs, as well as #ModelBasedSMAs within #UMA / #UMH / #UAP etc. from the wires, broker/dealers and custodians using Envestnet, Inc Orion, AssetMark, GeoWealth or their own fintech i.e., #MerrillLynchOne, #MorganStanleySelect etc. 📇 #CUSTOMINDEXING is creating a #uniqueindex composed of specific and individual equities and or assets i.e., bonds, cash etc.) while working with an investment manager, advisor and or home office fintech (in-sourced and or outsourced) that in many cases will not copy or mimic an established and current market index i.e., S&P500 or R2000 but is meant to have a return with a certain level of risk at a specified cost to meet an investors specific and dynamic needs. Firms that provide this inc.
