The construction of HS2’s Northolt Tunnel has reached a significant milestone, with 50% of the dig now complete. The 8.4-mile twin-bore tunnel, which passes underneath London, is now half-dug, as four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) continue to excavate a total of 16.8 miles. The first machine, named Sushila, was launched eastwards from West Ruislip in October 2022. One month later TBM Caroline began her parallel dig. Both TBMs will complete five miles before finishing their digs at the Green Park Way vent shaft in Greenford. Network Rail has announced that they’ve extended their long-term partnership with Amey, awarding the company two critical lots on the Eastern Routes Partnership Framework. Amey will deliver two programmes of renewals and enhancements across Network Rail’s Eastern region. The first, Lot 2a, will see maintenance and enhancement of signalling and telecoms equipment to facilitate safer and more efficient rail operations. The second programme, Lot 3a, includes work to maintain and enhance overhead line equipment (OLE), essential for electrification and efficient train services. The Eastern region supports over one billion passenger journeys annually and transports one million tonnes of freight each week. Amey has worked in the region for over 15 years and will continue to deliver the two new lots over the next five years. New images have been revealed of the £100 million Liverpool Baltic station, offering a preview of what the new rail link will look like upon completion 👀 The new station will be located in one of Liverpool’s fastest-growing areas, near to the former Cains Brewery and Anglican Cathedral, which was described as the UK’s “coolest neighbourhood.” It is one of four new stations planned by Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram, with the other three at Daresbury, Woodchurch on the Wirral, and Carr Mill in St Helens. The Mayor has committed to completing the Liverpool Baltic station project by the end of 2027, with work on the other three stations to be underway by the end of the decade. Train services will be affected by track replacement work in the Severn Tunnel and essential maintenance in the Patchway area during July. With further engineering work also taking place on the weekend of 24/25 August impacting train services that normally run between Bristol and South Wales. Earlier last month Network Rail announced that a milestone has been reached in the construction of a new entrance at Bristol Temple Meads Station This milestone sees the completion of the frame for the building, with this standing at six metres high and 20 metres wide. The project is costing £23 million and comes as part of the Temple Quarter programme of regeneration – one of the largest and most ambitious projects of its kind in Europe. LNER have released a new virtual video showing what Darlington Station will look like once it has completed its transformation work 👀 As part of the £140 million project to transform the station, two new platforms will be delivered on the eastern side, as well as a new multi-storey car park, a transport interchange, and a new gateway entrance. The project comes as a result of collaboration between a number of organisations, including the Tees Valley Combined Authority and Mayor Ben Houchen, alongside LNER, Network Rail and Darlington Borough Council.
