We have partnered with Porterbrook to equip our Class 170 'Turbostar' fleet with remote condition monitoring (RCM) hardware. This installation, conducted at Neville Hill TrainCare Centre, aims to enhance performance and reliability as part of one of our digital transformation initiatives supported by Instrumentel and Derby Engineering Unit. Our engineers will now access quick and reliable data, enabling a predictive maintenance approach that aims to prevent engine failures. The shift from reactive to preventative maintenance is expected to significantly reduce train downtime for repairs. This effort aligns with our Intelligent Trains programme launched in 2022. Iain Burnett, fleet director at Northern, said: “Remote and real-time monitoring of track and train is something the rail industry has been working towards over the past couple of years – and forms a central part of our Intelligent Trains programme.
